MacDonald DNA project

<t>I just realised I should also address the non-DNA aspect of your question. The short answer is yes: the family trees of that time are very variable and semi-mythical. On the other hand, successful guesses can sometimes be made: as I understand it, some historians already felt that Somerled might ...

MacDonald DNA project

<t>Hi Niall Yes. We have been in contact with the MacDonalds involved in coming to these conclusions. In releasing this press statement I suppose they are getting more confident about this conclusion, but it is still my impression that it is less certain than the Somerled signature which they also h...

Campbell Foster Sons

<t>From what I can see there is basically nothing to be said about who the Campbells were before Robert the Bruce, but they must have been "aristocratic" in some sense and therefore it would be easy to imagine that they came from a cadet branch of any of the Dalriadic families, or any other importan...

If Campbells NOT of the line of Dal Riata, then unlikely the Livingstones, or McGregors are either.

Hi Rob I am not familiar with all the details of the Campbell lines, but I know their "modal". Would it be true to say that our Boggs families are actually closer to the Campbell group 2 than to the Lismore Livingstones? Regards Andrew

A question for Gaelic speakers

In 1743 Duncan Maclea of Perthshire reported one understanding of the Maclea/Livingstone name's origin in his area was that it was "Leavensitdh". How would that word of been pronounced though? (Especially the -tdh.) Regards Andrew

DNA question to Rob

<t>Rob, Just looking through the latest summaries on your webpage I was wondering why you seperate the one Livingstone in group C away from group B. At first sight he is very close, and the biggest difference is 464c and 464d which I understand to be a tricky marker? As it was a general question, I ...

Handy hint for finding ancestors' first names

<t>Dear Kevin A remark from an amateur without very much experience yet... Concerning any attempt to say that someone is related to someone else because of a naming tradition (including Dunslebhe etc): it should always be asked whether the names being taken as significant were not common generally a...

Clan Donleavis and the relic callit Arwachyll

<t>Hi Rob Great to get some big posts from you again! You give a new strength to the idea that Donleavis was an old name associated with the later McOnleas and McLeas (although I think the argument that these were three versions of the same name could still do with some strengthening). Coming back t...

Macleas of Perthshire: info please

<t>It seems clear from the various old account of the family that in the 1700s there were people in Perthshire who knew themselves to have come from the Maclays. Furthermore, they seem to have used the named Livingstone in registers sometimes? (I have not found any McPheties by the way.) As it happe...
