I'm guessing others will have suggestions on Canadian and Irish records!

Great idea, I'd even encourage a Livingtone or Livingston/Maclay tartan somewhere in the photo before being able to submit them....

I am a great-great granddaughter of James Livingston. My understanding that he met his death in much the same way his brother did a couple of years later, being stranded in a snowstorm. It was thought that he might also have had a heart attack. I have just recently been told that James had two wives, perhaps sisters. I was told a few years ago that Marrion and Sarah were two ways of saying the same name. I am descended from his oldest child, Isabella, so would be descended from his first wife, Marrion, if there were really two. Does anyone have a clarification on that? I've been enjoying reading about Donald, Hugh, Miles and the rest. Thank you all for all your research.

Edith, Hello, since both of our 3rd great grandparents were Neil & Ann Livingstone I guess that makes us cousins.

Hi Edith, I am glad you are enjoying the Clan McLea/Livingstone forum and in particular the discussion of the Red River Livingstone settlers, many of whom settled in Iowa like your ancestor James Livingstone. As you have already probably figured out, Gerald Schmidt is a descendant of Jame's brother Hugh. And yes oddly enough they both froze to death in Iowa. As I mentioned to Gerald, you should check the Manitoba Historical Society Webpage as they have a great article originally published in 1777 that details your Livingstones that settled in Iowa. Regarding the Marion Bowie also spelled Buie in the family correspondence, I only know what I was told by a James Livingstone descendant that James was married in Scotland to Marion and then remarried after her death at the Red River Settlement Sally Bowie or Buie, perhaps her sister. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Thanks so much for the information. I first saw those articles from Jones County 25 years ago when my brother sent me copies of the historical society's newsletter articles. I've since discovered that the book the information came from is online at Rootsweb's Jones County, IA section. That's about all I knew about our Livingston history; no stories had been passed down in the family. Isabella died pretty young, though not before giving birth to eleven children. My grandfather was her seventh. The story of Marrion and Sarah is very new to me. I'm curious which of my cousins you corresponded with before; or maybe it was my niece, who produced a family history a few years ago. Sarah (Bowie) Livingston and Isabelle (Rose) Livingston both lived around 39 years as widows. Sarah died in 1884. My ancestors Isabella and Angus Matheson came to Iowa in 1840. Their two oldest children were born in the Red River Settlement and they are on the 1840 census there. (There was also another Angus Matheson, his cousin.) Their third child was born in Iowa in the late fall of 1840. We lived in North Dakota when I was a little kid but I've never been to Iowa or to Winnipeg. I've been living in Oregon fifty years.
