McLea in Antarctica!

Post by Kyle2 MacLea »

I don't know if anyone's seen this, but there is a McLea Nunatak, in Antarctica, and according to the records, this is its name origin: "A nunatak between Richards Nunatak and Sharks Tooth, in the Prince Albert Mountains, Victoria Land. Named by the Southern Party of the NZGSAE, 1962-63, for F. McLea, radio operator at Scott Base who was responsible for the field party radio communications." http://aadc-maps.aad.gov.au/aadc/gaz/di ... _id=128702 If anyone has any information about F. McLea, they should write in! Kyle=

Hi Kyle, this was named after my uncle, Quintin (Fred) McLea, who was the radio operator for the Southern Party of the New Zealand Geological and Survey Antarctic Expedition (1962-63).

Dear Lynda, I wonder--is this the same or a related F. McLae? http://cas.awm.gov.au/photograph/110456 This picture is of an F. B. McLae, "TARAKAN ISLAND, 1945-07-02. CPL F.B. MCLAE, RADIO TELEPHONE OPERATOR, NO. 452 SQUADRON RAAF, TESTING THE RADIO EQUIPMENT OF ONE OF THE SPITFIRES OF THE UNIT WHICH HAVE BEEN STRAFING BORNEO TARGETS SINCE THEIR ARRIVAL AT TARAKAN AIRSTRIP ON 1945-07-29" Either way, perhaps this F.B. McLae might be of some interest to someone.
