Does anyone use the likes of genes reunited?

Greetings one and all, It seems to me as a person yet to embark on the daunting task of tracing the ancestral line that there must be a lot of already trodden ground, made by previous researchers that could be tapped into. So my question is has or does anyone use the services of some of the on line facilities that offer exchange opportunities of the gene hunting kind. Indeed if my great granny is your great granny then our great great granddaddy is the same too! And it does seem less than sensible to trawl through all that research all over again if it could only be shared. It does seem logical that the further back ones travels the more overlap there would be. Is there perhaps an opportunity for us to share information? Easy for me to say as I have everthing to gain as I have only the word of mouth research currently written down, from the ancient ones in the family and so much work ahead of me, (incidentally if there are any of you out there who have an ancestor who was a light house keeper around the mid 1800's who travelled south to Ireland and then off the west coast of Pembrokeshire I would be interested!) Maybe if there was sufficient interest we could set up an exhange database? A clone of the on line offerings. I know there is software available. I would be willing to buy this and donate to the Forum, or outside agent for everyones use and enjoyment. Just a thought.... Peace to you all.

Hello Jason, I have signed up on Genes Reunited but haven't really used them. I used a Scotland Research Group on Yahoo Group to do my fine tuned searches and with this Clan's assistance we were able to get an excel spreadsheet that has all the searches for marriages and births from Scotlands People. We are looking to possibly post a database on this site where McLea and Livingstone's can add their research data into one large database and help exactly like you mentioned. Do you have a name, possibly a county of birth/marriage, and rough date I can look up in the Excel spreadsheet to see what i can find.

Hi Jason, That would be ideal situation to be able to share Livingstone family trees for example and try and make a match with different Livingstones. There has been some success in that area. I have found a few "lost" Livingstone Cousins, but generally speaking with few exceptions such as ROb Livingstone and the Bachuil Livingstones there has not been too much linkage through sharing family trees. THere are lots of Livingstones that have been located primarily in Britain, Canada, Australia and the UNited States but the stage where we can make a family connection has not been reached. It would be much simpler to do it on a Country by Country basis with those familiar with their Livingstone family taking the iniative to match up related Livingstone families, as I have attempted with some Canadian and U.S. Livingstone families connected to my Livingstone ancestor. Otherwise because there so many Livingstone world wide to research it becomes a situation where you cant see a forest for the trees if you understand what I mean. If one sticks to ones family locality and compares family trees of Livingstones there they can make a more effective contribution I suspect. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Thank you Donald and David, I can only go back as far back as James Livingstone (bet there were quite a few of those) born 1875 in South Wales who was a tailor in Cardiff and Bristol. He is the son of a lighthouse keeper who was stationed at the lighthouse off St Davids so the story goes. All his other sons had died at sea so my ancestor was shipped ashore to be a tailor! All previous generations were born in scotland. My great Aunt has some information but for whatever reason will not part with it! She paid good money for it she says. Niceone Aunty! Not a lot to go by is it. Any guidlines to get info would be greatfully received. Jason

Do you have a copy of the birth certificate for James, born in South Wales. This would give you the father and mothers name and maybe something to go off of for marriage certificates. Please let me know the parents names if you have them. Best regards, David

I've also tried finding "matching trees" and have found several personal websites or personal trees that showing Livingston(e) info but have had absolutely no luck making any type of connection.
