Dr Livingston's family tree

Post by Andrew Lancaster4 »

I have mentioned many time that apart from Steve Wilson's neat family tree of Dr Livingstone, Rob had one which unfortunately no longer exists. I had forgotten about the Internet Wayback machine which keeps old webpages! See: http://web.archive.org/web/200412090121 ... 88/dd1.htm Something has gone wrong with the formatting, and this might not be the final version Rob eventually made but I was relieved to see this again. Steve's, by the way, is at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... gstone.htm Best Regards Andrew

Dr Livingston's family tree

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

A quick glance at the internet seemed to indicate that there was no general agreement on just how many children Dr. Livingstone and his wife Mary Moffat had. I think there were three boys and two girls. Dr. Livingstone spent alot of time away from his wife in Africa and when she did finally rejoin him in Africa she ended up dying of Malaria. Dr. Livingstone made a superhuman effort to survive this disease which had sickened and weakened him on numerous occassions during his expeditions but even he in the end eventually sucumbed to it. DIgging up my notes I have Robert Livingstone (1846-1864) He had a falling out with his father, left Scotland and joined up with Northern Army during the American Civil War. He was wounded and taken prisoner by Confederates and died in one of their prison camps in 1864. Perhaps the Confederates would have treated him better if they known he was the son of Dr. Livingstone, but at this time Robert had changed his name. I wont go into further detail, but the story of Dr. Livingstone and his estranged son Robert is a sad story indeed. Unfortunately, the DOctor did not tolerate those who disagreed with him easily and I guess that included members of his own family. There was as son Tom Livingstone whom I have seen photos of in one of my Dr. Livingstone books, but have no info on. The third son was William Oswell Livingstone (1851-1892). There were two daughters that I know of. Agnes and Anna Mary Livingstone (1858-1939). THe sites Andrew has checked out and listed will probably give you more detailed information. D
