From what I can see there is basically nothing to be said about who the Campbells were before Robert the Bruce, but they must have been "aristocratic" in some sense and therefore it would be easy to imagine that they came from a cadet branch of any of the Dalriadic families, or any other important families. On the other hand, even if they were ring ins from outside, your post shows how it is still possible, given the vagueries of Scottish history, that all the other families that match the Campbells, might in effect be genetic cadets of the Campbells! As a next best thing, these MacNabs could get their DNA tested and compare it to other clans who are likely to have Dalriadic ancestry. Lots of weak evidence can add up to something of more value.
