Perhaps you can find the wedding on the "Scotlands People" website (if it happened in Scotland) and then if you order a register extraction you might be very lucky, and it might say where he is from. You might also find that if he was already in Scotland in 1861 or 1851, a more accurate birthplace was recorded on the censuses of those years. I have found it very hard to trace people back to Ireland, but sometimes people get lucky.
