My earliest known ancester was Duncan Livingston of Balvicar, a slate quarrier, who was aged 50 on the 1841 census of Kilbrandon and Kilchattan.

A note from the DNA project: When paper trails may be missing, DNA can fill the gap. We have Lismore Livingstones in the project, including the family of the clan chief. See: http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Discus ... Maclea.htm http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/partic ... Maclea.htm Regards Andrew

I employed the services of an on-line Scottish genealogist which helped greatly. He is based in Edinburgh and has ready access to all of the usual and unusual records. His name is Stuart Reid, stuart@scottishroots.com

I don't have anything to contribute to your quest, Margaret, but don't worry!

I have not done a great deal of research - but this page http://www.clanlivingstone.com/Research.htm gives information which is a start.
