Useful websites for those starting out in genealogy

Post by Bryan Livingston »

For the past couple of months, since starting my search for Scottish links to my Livingston ancestors, I have searched many different websites. Some are useful, many are free, some are a complete waste of time.

One you missed: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ Not the cheapest or most user friendly site, but an enormous help to Scottish genealogy nevertheless. They aim to have 1841 and 1851 censuses completely on line, indexed and scanned, within the next month. Ancestry.co.uk also has some more full transcriptions of some old Scottish registers, but scattered. You can get lucky let's say. Regards Andrew
