Battle of Pinkie Cleugh

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

Detailed info on the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh (1547) is also at Wikipedia. There is a list of clans who participated. Source listed as Phillip Warner's book "Famous Scottish Battles" published in 1975. Perhaps the MacDougalls, Appin Stewarts or Morvern MacLeans also participated. I was researching these three clans circa 1300-1600 AD yesterday and I think it was stated that one of them was at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh. regards Donald

Hi Kyle, I don't know that those details of the clan's participation in the battle are available. It is interesting that MacLeas are on the list. My best suggestion it that we locate the original source that listed MacLeas at that battle. I suspect however that if there was anything more detailed on the MacLeas in 1547 I would have thought that the Young Bachuil and Robert would have located it in their research. The Argyll Campbells who acknowledged the significance of the Baron of Bachuil and his heriditary position on the Isle of Lismore in a 1544 Charter were probably still on good terms with the Baron and his clan at that time. In 1547 the Argyll Campbells may have joined forces with the MacLeas taking the Staff with them for protection in battle. I have learned that the Appin Stewarts were in a bitter feud with the Campbells that stemed from the murder of Alexander Stewart in 1520 and the subsequent reprisals on the part of the Appin Stewarts. Some of the other Stewart families of course would have no doubt have been at the 1547 battle. Perhaps someone in Scotland has access to the book I mentioned in my previous e-mail and can ultimately come up with an original list. I really don't think we will have much luck finding detailed information on the MacLeas at that battle. There was once a great library at Iona that may well of had the entire history of Saint Molaug

Hi Donald, "Famous Scottish Battles" by Philip Warner is available through Amazon, www.amazon.co.uk. I don't know whether this is helpful to you or not. Anyway, I have ordered a copy for myself and will let you know of any information it reveals about McLea participation in the battle of Pinkie. It will be a useful book to have on my shelves, and thank you for drawing it to our attention. All the best Jill

I have heard on many occasions that the Coarbs of St Moluag led the armed hosts of the Lords of Lorn, later the kings of Dalriada and eventually the Kings of Scots.

Assuming that the submitted information from Wikipedia is correct that our MacLeas participated at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh (1547) which I hope to prove one way or another, then it would be a good possibility that the Baron, his sacred staff and his Maconlea clan were there with the Campbells.

Hi Jill, Well hopefully that book has a list that includes the Maconleas (MacLeas)and a source of this information. If not then someone has submitted this info to Wikipedia who has info on the Battle unknown to most of us. So all I really know it that someone listed that book as a source of info on the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh. I am sure you will find the book interesting regardless of whether you locate info on the MacLeas. regards Donald
