McLea name variant -- a new one
Hi all, Don't think there is a connection here. according to Scottish Directories the name doesn't appear here. At first I thought it would have an Irish connection, but according to entries in Google the name is known in N.America and appears to be of East European Origin, Slav or Romanian.

Would pronounce Mcleay , Mclea , Mcclay all the same way. Have not yet investigated other moves from Dingwall fully yet but apart from my lot coming east to banffshire others also moved away from Dingwall. My guess would be some south to central belt in Scotland , Glasgow , Edinburgh and some emigrated. Will investigate when time permits. Two of the family that settled in Banffshire moved on from here next generation , one to Aberdeen and one to Edinburgh 1830s where he raised a big family and worked as a fireman on ships from Edinburgh. So i guess thats a link from Edinburgh to Banffshire to Rosshire in only 3 generations . I suppose it would be easy to assume they were from different families being from different areas and a change of spelling into the bargain!spelling was Mcleay in Edinburgh..............H

Hi Kyle, Yet another spelling of your name. Interesting. I am told that some of those who use the "K" in their Mackinlea or Macklea name arent actually connected to highland Maconleas and that the k was added to the gaelic Mac in more recent times. Regarding my earlier tartan letter. The old Livingstone Tartan is almost identical the McColl red green black tartan. The MCColls served in large numbers with the Maconleas in the Stewart of Appin Regiment in 1746. regards Donald

Welcome Stewart Don't forget that spelling conventions were often lost amongst early "Scots Irish" immigrants, creating new variations, and keeping old ones going on that are now extinct in Scotland. Regards Andrew
