Hi Jerry, I can't get inside the heads of your Livingstone family, but for some reason our branch of the Argyll Livingstones dropped the e for a time. Mine never made an effort to retrieve it, but your family apparently did. One of Doctor Livingstone's biographers interestingly enough noted that the Doctor's father a resident of Blantyre, Scotland near Glasgow, dropped the e and for a time the Livingstones went with this spelling. I don't know the real reason except that perhaps it was to match the spelling of many other Livingstons in the Lowlands who seem to spell their name distinctly without the e like that of the old aristocratic Lowland Livingston fammily. That was my understanding of it anyways. regards Cousin Donald

Hi Jerry, Not to confuse anyone, Doctor Livingstone changed it back and spelled his name thereafter with the distinctive e. Just want to make that clear about this little known bit of Dr. Livingstone trivia. My ancestor Miles who in Scotland spelt his name with an e at the end, had two other Livingstone families living on neighbouring farms in Esquesing Township, Halton County, Ontario may be he wanted to change the spelling to differentiate himself from them. regards Cousin Donald

Donald, I wonder if you'd e-mail me at edith97062atyahoodotcom so I can tell you what information I have on the Red River Settlement without taking up a lot of space here. I know you want to be helpful but I already have some of what you've found. Some of it came from you in the first place, via this forum or Mary Somers. I know you are tired and not feeling well, but you said you'd look through what you have, and if I can save you some time and energy in the long run, I'd like to do that. I get the daily newsletter from the New York Times. Today's "On This Day" says it's the birthday of "David Livingstone, Scottish missionary and explorer, opened Africa to the west" - 19 Mar 1813 to 1 May 1873. I thought that was extra interesting, as you've been talking a lot about him lately.

Hello Kyle, Three separate sources show it to be May 1, 1873 http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_f ... avid.shtml http://www.answers.com/topic/david-livingstone http://www.westminster-abbey.org/librar ... gstone.htm So I would say Wikipedia needs updating :) haha David

Hi David and Kyle, Perhaps I can be of some assistance regarding the death of Doctor David Livingstone. I happen to have a 1874 edition of Stanley's book "Life and Labors of Dr. Livingstone". According to Stanley: "...the great explorer had been ill with chronic dysentary several months...On the 1st of May 1873 Livingstone was placed in bed.... On the fourth day Livingstone was insensible and died about midnight." The place was Muilala beyond Lake Bamba in the Bisa country. Following his death, the Doctor's entrails were removed and buried under a nearby tree and carved on the tree was this simple inscription: Dr. Livingstone died: May 4, 1873 His body was preserved and placed into a coffin made of bark which his faithful African friends made certain eventually made its way back to England with his personal possessions. Hope this is of some help. regards, Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Thank you Donald. You have helped to show that anyone can write anything on websites but true historical documents come on paper and (originally) written in ink. So I change my statement to someone needs to update the BBC and westminster-abby. =) David
