Just thought I'd start a new Tartan thread, to help organize things. I visited the Library of Michigan and checked out their Tartan section. They had "What Is My Tartan? or The Clans of Scotland, with their Septs and Dependents" by Frank Adam, FSA Scot., 1896 (W&AK Johnston) It is basically a discussion of the history of Tartan, with a list of Clans and their "septs."

It is everything they say, certainly, the Gordon tartan it is wrapped in being the only actual TARTAN in it! But unless you belong to one of the MAJOR clans, recognized at that time, the work is not useful to you. Its history of Tartan may be of interest, but I have a feeling others have since covered the same material, and probably with a better historical perspective.

I am not certain how much the information that we are a sept of Stewart of Appin is based upon the knowledge that Maconleas (Livingstones) served in the Appin regiment with more powerful Stuarts of Appin at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Perhaps some 19th century history jumped to conclusions from looking at the list of clans that were in the APpin regiment with the Stuarts of Appin. Anotherwards I don't know that it is an actual historic fact that we were septs of Stewarts of Appin, but certainly one historian after another over the years seems to have bought into this notion much to the annoyance of Niall. I was on a website earlier that showed several Livigstone tartans including #814 & #1003, #814 was not ancient, muted, or dress, it looked more like #1003.

To answer both at once-- Donald, I believe you're right that it has to do with Appin's sphere of influence and perhaps especially the association of McLea with Appin in regards to Culloden and the Banner...

But I will not be deterred =) a time line approach would be good but this is what I found.. the 1003, 1488 are all relatively new numbering systems. When I went to the "House of Tartan I found this information: 650 - Source: W Bill Ltd. London Retailer #814: Source - MacGregor Hastie Collection #895: Source - W & AK Johnston - Date 1906 #1003: Source - Robert Bain #1488: Source - Wilson on loan to Anderson - Date 1934 Only problem is I did a look around at other Tartans #649 (MacLaren): Source Mr. I.G. Campbell MacLaren - Status: Approved by Clan Chief - Date: 1981 #651: Ohio District Tartan was done in 1984 #813 is "Wilson's No 193 tartan" - Source "Wilsons' of Bannockburn '1819' So as Tartan's go, the 1003 is just a number that the Tartan Authority gave it.. most likely in the 1980's. - Does anyone who has the older books see a number reference with the Livingston Tartans or just the title "Livingston Clan Tartan"?

So I've started the search and this is what I've found: #650 - Source: W Bill Ltd. London Retailer - "W Bill Ltd." is still in London. There is a curator Ray Hammet and the company has been around since 1846. no email address found yet. #814: Source - MacGregor Hastie Collection. http://www.tartans.scotland.net/tartan_ ... d=2261.htm - This sample comes from the MacGregor-Hastie collection which forms the basis of the cloth archive of the Scottish Tartans Society. Some of the samples, including this one, were unmarked. One can assume that the sample dates between 1930 and 1950.
