List of Sept Names

Post by D.W.Livingston »

Going from your example this is the new list I pulled. This just has Mac (instead of M', Mac, and Mc) for everything except McLea and McLae. I look at the Sept List sort of like a Search Engine Optimization form. The more name variations you have the more likely someone with fat fingers will find the information. From this the Sept list can be added to or taken away from until it is exactly what is need. Bog, Bogg, Boggs, Bogs Clae, Clay, Clea, Clee Dhuinsleibhe, Dhunleibhe, Donleavy, Gorm Klea, Levingston, Levingstone, Levingstoun Levingstoune, Leviston, Levistone, Levistoun Levistoune, Livingston, Livingstone, Livingstones Livingstoun, Livingstoune, Mac O Lea, Mac O Lei MacAlea, MacAllea, MacAn-Lei, Mac-an-Leighs MacClae, MacClay, MacClee, MacClew, MacCloo MacCloy, MacClue, MacCluie, MacColeif MacCollae, MacCollea, MacConleif, MacDhuinsleibhe MacDhunleibhe, MacDonleavy, MacDonnslae, MacDowleavis MacDuinnshleibhe, MacDunlaif, MacDunlave, MacDunleavy MacDunlewe, MacDunslaif, MacDunslaphe, MacDunslaue MacDunslave, MacDunslea, MacDunsleibhe, MacInlay MacInlea, MacKinley, MacKlea, MacKoilea MacLae, MacLay, MacLea, MacLeay MacOlea, MacOnlave, MacOnlay, MacOnlea MacOnleif, MacOnlew, McLae, McLea David

List of Sept Names

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

Hi Niall, MacKinley is an interesting case as MacKinley's generally understand themselves to be septs of Farquharsons and Clan Buchanon and with an ancient history of the Lennox district distinct from our MacLeas. Sometimes they are referred to as a Sept of the Stewart of Appin, but I cant help but wonder if that is someones assumption over the years that MacKinlay and Maconlea is just a spelling variation of the same clan. At the time of the 1745 rebellion when we participated with the Stewart of Appin regiment the officers referred to us as Clan Maconlea or McLea. I am sure that too many would have used the McKinley spelling. regards Donald

David, Just of interest the Livingstones that became known as the Boggs family were likely part of a wave of Lowland SCots that settled in Ulster, Ireland between 1610 and 1640, known in Irish History as the Plantation period. If that is the case the name change from Livingstone to Boggs happened well before Clan Maconlea made the change to Livingstone and therefore I suspect the Livingstone-Boggs family of Ireland are connected to an original Lowland Livingstone family given the likely time of Irish settlement.
