Dear Forum, I recently spent some time learning about old scripts in use in Scotland, something which I hope may someday be useful in reading old records.

Thank you for the tip, Kyle, about the Scottish handwriting site - looks interesting. Also interesting to see Mconleas listed in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan parish. A quick riffle through my road atlas has not turned up a township approximating Ardloing, but when I have time I will get my Ordnance Survey maps out and see if I can find something. Regards, Jill

Further to my earlier posting, I have searched for Ardloing, keeping an eye open for similarly spelt names, but without any luck. The parishes of Kilchattan and Kilbrandon lie approximately ten miles southwest of Oban and eighteen miles north of Lochgilphead. They cover quite a small area, and as well as the mainland incorporate the isles of Seil, Luing and Easdale. I suspect that Ardloing ceased to exist when people were cleared off the land. Jill

Dear Kyle For British genealogy I often use www.multimap.com, which now has a very good function that allows you to change over to Ordinance Survey maps, which give many local farm names etc. This does solve all problems, and for some parts of Britain there are better options, but thought I'd mention it. Hi Kyle, You dont suppose that the Argyll Hearth Tax Records of 1694 cover the Isle of Lismore, Movern, Mull and other areas adjacent to the Appin area? regards, Donald
