Isle of Luing Farm and Croft Tenants 1730 and 1834
From the Isle of Luing webpage is a listing of the clan names of tenants for the year 1730 and 1834. The Isle of Luing is located in the Parish of Kilchattan in Argyll. Note both McOnlea and Mclea 1730 and then Livingtone 1834. 1730

Hi Kyle, I agree. I am trying to more details as to the source of the 1730 records. Now I would like to go back and look at the Kilchatton Parish Church records just to refresh my memory on the subject of MacLeas and Maconleas. regards Donald

Hi Kyle, Checking David's info for Kilbrandon and Kilchatton Parish he states that there were 15 "Livingstone" births between 1750 and 1759 in those parishes. I can actually narrow that down a bit further as the surviving Parish Baptismal records for Kilbrandon and Kilchatton Parish begins in the year 1753. It would be interesting to take note of the earliest record of a Livingstone baptism in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish. This Parish is only about 14 miles from Oban. What was the earliest recorded Livingstone baptism on the Isle of Lismore 1759 or something like that? There was a Livingstone descendant that contacted the forum who had a relative that lived at Black Mills Bay on the ISle of Luing I recall. It it interesting but not surprising with what we know about the name change taking place sometime between 1750-1760, that we have some sort of record surfacing apparently from 1730 for Maconlea/McLea for the Isle of Luing in South West Argyll. It would seem these McLeas/McOnleas were in the area of influence of the Baron of Bachuil and followed their Chief and changed their name in the 1750's. regards Donald

It seems you're right! Perhaps David will have a look at the database to see what names he sees in that timeframe (don't remember if he has already)? Kyle=

This is what I have for Births and Marriages: I first did "Kilbrandon and Kilchattan", and then "Lismore Appin and Duror", and finally I just grabbed all the ARGYLL listed. It appears the first Livingston(e) baptisms in Argyll came from "Kildalton" (at least from Scotland's People records) I put a place for Parents because even though there might be 15 births we have only 7 different parents involved (I grouped MCEWEN, CHRISTAN(KATRINE) and MCINTYRE, CATHRINE (KATRINE) and the names are so simular with same father's name) I'll try to do some more research. - David - Kilbrandon and Kilchattan ========================= B - 10/05/1753 LIVINGSTONE, JOHN to LIVINGSTONE, DONALD and FLEMING, SARAH M - 18/05/1753 MCCOAK, PATRICK to LIVINGSTON, SARAH B - 22/07/1753 LIVINGSTON, SARAH to LIVINGSTON, MALCOM and MCDIARMID, ANNA B - 01/01/1754 LIVINGSTONE, DONALD to LIVINGSTONE, DONALD and MCINTYRE, CATHRINE B - 09/01/1754 LIVINGSTONE. Hi David, That probably covers most of what is available or at least what parish records have survived fire and flood over the years. Nice job on that. The McLeas certainly have migrated over the centuries and are widely dispersed in Scotland. The old Statistical Accounts from Scotland cover Argyll Parishes and also indicate that some of the old families in the Parish of Lismore and APpin tended to marry their neighbours and over the centuries many of these families are closely interelated. I found this statement interesting in light of Andrew's research on the DNA and what this gentleman in the statistical account is saying is what I suspected. And for example in Movern across from the Isle of Lismore you have the ancient McInnes Clan that have been in the Movern area for centuries. Now Donald Livingstone from the Battle of Culloden married an McINnes and his mother was also an McInnes. Such close ties among local Movern and Isle of Lismore families I suspect would create similiar DNA patterns. Anyways I found the author of the statistcal accounts comments interesting in light of our DNA research.

Hi Kyle, Regarding most of the old records for Dunslea, McOnlea etc I have actually been able to pin point the location where some obscure village was mentioned. Finished last night. Ardloing for your John Mconlea Older and Younger however beats me. It must be on one the Hebrides Islands such as Luing that comprised Kilbrandon and Kilchatton Parish, but have had no luck. I am trying to get in touch with someone from the Isle of Luing to see if it rings any bells with them. Not surprisingly all of the Dunislea McOnlea type records all seem to be in Argyll, some from the Islands, some from Mull, another one I found to have originated in an obscure village in Appin. regards, Donald

David, I think this points to McLeas in Stirling changing their name to Livingstone. What happens to Livingstons there in 1800? To my mind this further points to the Lowland Livingstons coming from Argyll and following the name change. Good work. Regards Niall

I wonder whether Kyle's Ardloing is a misspelling of Aird Luing. This is on the southern tip of the Isle of Luing. It looks a rather unpromising place to live and the only sign of any possible habitation there now is a sheepfold. However there may have been a settlement there in the seventeenth century. I have a very detailed map of the area (one of the Ordnance Survey Explorer series) and it was from this that I gleaned this information. There is a website for Luing which is: www.isleofluing.co.uk Hope this is useful. I have a particular interest in Luing as my 3 x great aunt was born at Bardrishaig on Luing in 1785. Regards, Jill
