Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs
The Standing council have now updated their website at http://www.clanchiefs.org/main.html and you will see that Maclea has been added here http://www.clanchiefs.org/chiefs.html. There is a brief history of the clan here http://www.clanchiefs.org/?init=clanfinder&id=MacLea which is missing a couple of images. Regards Niall

Thanks Niall! It is interesting to see how they've mixed the lowland and highland aspects without being too dogmatic. However I wonder if we can really say that it is is known that the Livingstones of Bachuil are a branch of the Livingstons who were so powerful in the lowlands. Isn't that still a theory? Best Regards Andrew

Hmm. I used the search function for clans, searching with maclea, and got a result called Livingstone: http://www.clanchiefs.org/?init=clanfin ... ivingstone "...The lands of the Linlithgows were ravaged during the civil war by the Covenanters and Oliver Cromwell as a punishment for their loyalty to the Crown. Another branch of the family include the Livingstones of Bachuil who were the hereditary holders of the crozier of St. Molluag as well as holding a part of the island of Lismore. The clan is currently not represented on the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs."

Wow! Good Find Andrew. Even clicking on your link makes it go to the main page (as if it could not find it). But going to the MacLea webpage http://www.clanchiefs.org/?init=clanfinder&id=MacLea and changing it to id=Livingstone brings up the page. I agree that this page should be removed or changed to show that 1.) we are not a branch of the lowland Livingston family andor 2.) Show that the Highland clan is represented now. Again Great Find Andrew. David

Hello, I would assume the author of this Maclea history means by "old records" the MacLea history from the 18th century which vaguely alludes to a possible ancient family connection between the aristocratic lowland livingstones and the highland macleas. If there were any old records that Reverend McLea located to back this statement he unfortunately did not share their originswith the reader. That being said, I suspect much of what Reverend McLea covers in his history seems likely to have originated from credible sources, but we can only so far in my view with the notion from Reverend McLea's acoount of the MacLea history that the Lowland Livingstones are related to the Highland Mcleas. I am not certain it should be stated as a fact just a possibility. regards, Donald

Hello, Andrew will perhaps in the distant future be able to better answer this nagging question as to whether highland MacLeas and the Linlithgo Livingstones are connected. Could it have been simply an ancient marriage connection between one branch of the MacLeas and the Linlithgo Livingstones in the middle ages? regards, Donald
