More on Glamis, in Angus/Forfarshire

Post by Andrew Lancaster3 »

I have now received the Tay Valley FHS indices to the 1851 census in Glamis and Kinnettles. As far as I am aware, Dundee itself has not yet been indexed? No sign of Livingstones or similar in Kinnettles, but in Glamis two entries: a couple, William and Jannet both born in Glamis (bk 5, sch 54); and two children, William and Flora who seem to be seperate (bk 5, sch 37) and both born in Norfolk. Glamis also certainly had some Craigs (and similar), which is the surname my ancestral immigrant gave for his mother. Does anyone happen to have an Angus censuses to hand? Regards Andrew

The Glamis registers continue this frustrating pattern of indicating that there must also be other events which were not registered. 1. Births. Some grouping can be done. Children of Alexander:- 10 2 Jul 1758 LIVINGSTON LAUCHLIN 9 18 Jul 1751 LIVINGSTON KATHARINE Children of James:- 3 9 Nov 1787 LIVINGSTON DAVID 17 29 Sep 1803 LIVISTON MAY 7 11 Jun 1808 LIVINGSTON JANNET Children of David (note that my ancestor was David Peter and said that his father was John):- 2 1 Jun 1788 LIVINGSTON ANDREW 1 8 Jul 1809 LIVINGSTON ALEXR 4 23 Mar 1793 LIVINGSTON DAVID 5 14 Nov 1799 LIVINGSTON ELIZABETH 6 25 Feb 1791 LIVINGSTON JAMES 8 31 May 1795 LIVINGSTON JOHN 11 30 Nov 1797 LIVINGSTON MARGARET 13 22 Jul 1801 LIVINGSTON MARY  14 26 Jul 1804 LIVINGSTON ROBERT 16 12 Dec 1806 LIVINGSTONE CATHERINE Children of John:- 12 4 Aug 1802 LIVINGSTON MARGARET  Children of Peter:- 15 1 Jul 1813 LIVINGSTON WILLIAM ONLY this last William can be traced in further marriage, census and burial records in Glamis. Although perhaps Elizabeth above was the mother of Jannet Deuchar[sp?] who appears in the burial registers along with William and his wife. But despite this 2 Livingstone women appear in the marriage registers: 23 Dec 1837 LIVINGSTON WILLIAM JANET REA/ 17 Jun 1853 LIVINGSTON ISABEL THOMAS GRINDLAY/ 10 Mar 1838 LIVINGSTON MARJORY JAMES CARNEGY/ Maybe Marjory and Isabel came from out of town. The marriages of the earlier Livingstones do not appear, so we do not even know the mothers' names of most of the children born in Glamis. The general impression is of people very irregular about baptisms and probably moving around a lot - note how many are weavers by profession, and maybe the war also has something to do with the confusion. Best Regards Andrew
