Hi Donald, Indeed, I would say McLea seems to be the preferred orthographic form, although I've never been entirely sure that the way it is written wasn't viewed as completely interchangeable and as a result meaningless in terms of Mac vs Mc.

Hi Kyle, That is interesting. I dont know whether to put too much significance in all these spelling variations of McLeas but I am finding that for example Macleay was a very popular spelling with the Rosshire Macleas in the north, so it does help in determining where they might have originated when we find them in the lowlands for example. Noting the distribution by County in the census records for all these different Maclea spelling variations has been a worthwhile effort I feel. I am in the process of revisiting the Maclea etc.records in the 1841 Census. regards, DOnald
