Hi OZ,

A number of Livingston families from Western Argyllshire settled in Australia in the 1800's. I found info on a few of the original Livingston families that settled in Australia in the 1800's. One of them was the family of James Livingston of Ballachulish, Argyll who as noted travelled to Australia with his wife Isabella and children to Australia in the 1850's aboard the Marco Polo. I have a bit on info on them I gathered in years past and posted on the this forum as one of James descendants years ago was contact with me.

James and Isabella Livingston's children's baptism/birth info from the St. John Church in Ballachulish have survived.
1. Duncan Livingston baptized Nov. 12, 1839 born Nov. 12, 1839 son of James Livingston and Bell Clark of Laroch (Ballachulish)

2. James Livingston baptized June 10, 1844 born June 9, 1844 son of James Livingston and Isabella Clark

3. Mary Livingston baptized June 29, 1846 born June 28,1859 son of James Livingston and Isabella Clark of Laroch (Ballachulish)

1841 Scottish Census
(Ballachulish)
James Livingston Quarrier age 35 (a number of Livingston in the 1800's were employed in the Ballachulish slate quarries)
Isabella age 30
John age 3
Duncan age 1

1851 Census (Ballachulish)
James Livingston 45 Appin
Isabel Livingston 41 Appin (Isabel Clark)
John Livingston 13 Appin
Duncan Livingston 11
Ann Livingston 8
James Livingston 6
Mary Livingston 4

James Livingston of West Laroch, Ballachullish slate miner and his wife Isabel Clark and family travelled to Australia in 1852 aboard the Marco Polo
Passenger List Marco Polo arrived Sept 25, 1852 Melbourne Australia
James Livingston 38
Isabel 36
Duncan 12
Ann 10
James 8
Mary 5

James Livingston born abt. 1805 died in 1885 at Kerang, Victoria, Australia
Father unknown Mother Mary Fraser
Note: James Livingston like a number of other Ballachulish, Argyll area Livingstons were Episcopalians and as such some of the church records do not survive. There does not appear to be a birth or baptism record for James and it be in the Church of Scotland parish record collection. The 1851 Census info is confusing somewhat referring to James and family as being born in Appin likely does not mean he and his family were born in Appin Parish, but in the district of Appin which at one time include Duror and included the area of Ballachulish where James Lived and was likely born.

Hi OZ Livingstone

A Livingstone a descendant of James and Isabella Livingstone of Ballachulish, Argyllwho departed for Australia on the Marco Polo was tested by Familytreedna years ago now and was a relatively close match with my own Livingstone cousin who I had tested around 2006 and they matched with a group of over 20 Livingstones primarily of Western Argyllshire Highland Maclea- Livingstone ancestry their ancestors residing in the 1700's and 1800's in Mull, Morvern and other neighbouring Parishes in Highland Western Argyllshire. My own Highland Livingstone ancestor my great great great grandfather Miles Livingstone was boatbuilder according to his 1812 marriage record in Islay, Argyllshire born in Morvern Parish, Argyll. A few days after his marriage on the Isle of Islay Argyllshire to his second wife Janet Livingston possibly a cousin he boarded a schooner for Sligo Ireland where and his wife boarded a Hudson Bay Company vessel The Robert Taylor destined for Hudsons Bay. From a Hudson Bay fort my ancestor and other Scottish and some Irish settlers travelled by small boats southward to Lord Selkirk's Red River settlement and Miles Livingston eventually received a land grant in Selkirk's Colony and his log cabin was built in 1814 along the Red River in what is today in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

It has been a while. I recall you also had a Livingston cousin do the YDNA test if I am not mistaken. Sorry. I had to refresh my memory regarding your own interesting Tranent Parish, East Lothian Livingston family connection in Lowland Scotland with a James Livingston and Elizabeth Hogg and their son. As you recall I found it quite interesting when it became clear to me that you are descended James Livingston and Sarah Wood's son James Livingston and Guy Livingston who also some years back contacted the forum turned out to be descended from his older brother Alexander Livingston who married Janet Mark. I was wondering if you attempted to contact Guy Livingston who seems to be related to you own Livingston family.
