Hi John,
It is interesting that this James Livingston who was married Mary McMillan in Colonsay according to the records and a few years later settled in Canada, is a Livingston who was born in Mull in the early 1800's and who before 1840 apparently ended up in Colonsay around the same time as Angus and his family and has a McMillan residing with him according to the 1841 census. The other interesting thing that I am unable to explain is why their Livingston descendant is the closest match to my Livingston cousin. That i did not expect as I was not aware of any connection. It is likely a few hundred years distant in western Argyllshire. It is generally understood though that some of the highland Livingstons from Mull and neighbouring Morvern Parish would be related so it is not totally surprising. My great-great-great grandfather Mile Livingston b. abt. 1775 according to his 1812 marriage info was a native of Morvern Parish, in western Argyllshire. Not surprising that some Mull Livingstons ended up residing on the neighbouring Island of Colonsay as this James Livingston and his wife Mary McMillan did and as Angus Livingston and his family did. Angus Livingston's brother's Donald family that remained for a time at Ross of Mull arent in the DNA project so we unfortunately dont have those results which would probably have been helpful.

Actually that info on James Livingston will be of interest to the descendant of James Livingston that has contacted the forum. Perhaps they are distant cousins.

Donald

Hi John,
Thats a good idea.

I have some thoughts regarding the results for our specific dna group mostly speculative in nature but here goes. I think our Maclea/Livingstone ancestors are connected in the past in Western Argyllshire the genetic distances among some Livingstons in our group and this suggests to me we have been in the past together as a family group for sometime in Western Argyllshire, long before last names began to be used in Western Argyllshire. We have Livingstons in our Western Argyllshire dan group that are as much as 67-6 from some others Livingstons in the dna group, while others are significantly closer. ANotherwards the family connection for some in the group is perhaps going back a number of generations in Western Argyllshire before we were known as Livingstons in some cases. I find the genetic distance between some Livingstons in our specific dna group quite intriguing. To me that suggest a family connection among some of us in Western Argyllshire that has some age to it, if you follow my drift. Others in our group are significantly closer in terms of genetic distance to one another, perhaps suggesting they are more closely related and more recently related.

Donald

Hope you had a good Christmas. Good to see that you've found more information on Gavin's kin. What year and where did Gavin Livingstone b. 1835 die?

I recently came across discharge certificate for Angus Livingstone from Shiaba, he was discharged from the Argyll Defensibles in 1801, at 24-25 years old, due to a musket ball wound through his hand, probably during the Irish Revolution.

According to the discharge cert., he was a Kilmainham pensioner, not Chelsea.

As far as I can make out, the discharge is signed by Col. Clavering, see below for further info, it also states, Angus was discharged due to being shot through the hand by a musket ball.

Argyle Fencibles (1794) — Second Battalion

The Argyle fencibles was raised by Colonel Henry M. Clavering (a Major who transferred from the 98th Foot), to whom the command was given. Captain John Campbell who was on half-pay previously of the late independent companies was promoted to be Lieutenant-Colonel of the regiment.

The regiment was moved to Ireland where it was stationed until its return to Scotland in 1802, when it was disbanded.

Highland dress. Facings Blue Colonel Henry Mordaunt Clavering. Formed 25 October 1794 Disbanded at Ayr 24 July 1802 Served in Ireland.
