Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar
Thank you for the welcome & also the details of the family through the census records - very helpful, especially as I was planning on tracking the family through census records to get more of sense of who they were and what they did. This gives me a huge start,
I have now located Jean Livingston nee Donaldson's death certificate on the Scotland people site. She died in April 1862 aged 47. Her father was a lime stone quarrier. Her widower Donald died in Nov 1877. He was working as a gardener at the time.
Isabella (my ancestor) appears to have two daughter - my great grandmother Jane born in 1876 and Barbara born in 1880. On both occassiosns Isabella was working as a domestic servant. Jane's birth was registered by her grandfather Donald and Barbara's by James, her uncle.
I had the pleasure of meeting my great grandmother as a child - she died when I was about 10. I wish now I had asked her what brought her from the Isle of Seil to Dundee and more about life on the Island. I hadn't apprecaited their history until I started searching my family tree. It has also prompted me to plan a visit to the Island this summer.
Best wishes

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar
Hi Sandra,
I think there are a great many of us doing our family history research who wished they had asked their older relatives about their ancestors. It is however fortunate for you to have met your great-grandmother before she passed on. No doubt she would of had some interesting stories tell regarding her Livingston family from the Isle of Seil. It would indeed be worthwhile for you to visit the the Island of your ancestors.
I can tell you that a significant number of Western Argyllshire Livingstons found work in the slate quarries located at Ballachulish, Isle of Luing, Easdale and Isle of Seil. I have studied the Scottish census records and found this to be the case. It would seem that slate put bread and butter on the table of many of our clan in the 1800's and likely before that. And some very excellent slate came out of Western Argyll I am told.
Interestingly, the forum has been contacted by some of the descendants of these slate workers in the last five years. As you may have noticed from some of our earlier postings here the slate industry kept Western Argyllshire Livingstons employed for many years. A number of their descendants settled in America, Australia and New Zealand. You might want sometime to read " Luing, Seil Islands that Roofed the World" by Mary Withall about Luing and Seil and the history of the slate quarries there. It is available on-line through Amazon.com
I have had no luck determing where "Dalemaig" was in Kilbrandon Parish. Presumingly on the Isle of Seil but I dont know that for sure. Donald b. abt. 1814 a tenant occupied one of the crofts there I would suppose. I think he was listed in the 1851 Census as a laborer at Dalemaig in Kilbrandon Parish age 37 born in Kilbrandon Parish,Argyllshire. In the 1861 Census he is listed as a farm servant residing at Dalemaig No. 2 age 47 born in Kilbrandon Parish, Argyllshire. In the 1871 Census Donald is recorded as living in Kilbrandon Parish age 57 and he is a gardener. No details in the 1871 Censu as to where what village he was living in Kilbrandon Parish but his 1877 death record probably has more details regarding that. I think you mentioned he died at Easdale. "Dalemaig" may be on a more detailed map of the area from the 1800's or an old Argyll area Ordinance Survey map. I will see if I can find it.
regards,
Donald

Hi Sandra
Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner. I've been trying to work out how best to let you have the information I have without having to type it all out. Perhaps some one who is more computer saavy than I could enlighten me.

Kind regards

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar
Margaret,
I came across this a while ago, while looking for someone else, I also live in Scotland, from Greenock.
At Port Glasgow manse, Clune Brae, on 07 June 1881, Robert Livingstone, occ. ploughman, residence difficult to read, looks like ---dockhall, Kilmacolm, f. Donald Livingstone, occ. gardener, deceased, m. Jean Donaldson, occ. domestic servant, residence looks like Shovelbraid, Houston, again, residence difficult to read, f. Andrew Gray, occ. ploughman, deceased, m. Christina McCorkindale.
Witnesses Margaret McLaren & James Fleming.
I've had a look through present day farms in the area, I don't see either of these two,
John

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar
Hi John,
Thanks for that. I live in Kirkintilloch, just north of Glasgow.
I have a note of this marriage and I have his usual residence at the time of his marriage as Parkhill, Kilmacolm. I think I must have got this from the original source so it may have been clearer and I have Christina's usual residence as Shovelboard, Houston. I do think that Shovelbraid seems more likely though.
I have the names and approximate dates of birth of the family of this couple - Mary born c1883, Donald c1884, Jeanie c 1888 and William c1890 but haven't followed this line any further. Robert died 2nd October 1927 at 76 Bay Street, Port Glasgow and his death was registered by his son D. Livingston.
Incidently my Gt Grandfather Duncan Livingston was born in Greenock in c1845, son of Neil Livingston and Janet Cameron but I haven't been able to find his birth. I have always wondered what the connection was with Greenock, Port Glasgow etc. I see that Robert's brother was born in Lochwinnoch in 1835 probably because that was where Jean Donaldson was born. Neil and Donald were brothers so possibly they came to the area for employment.
Thanks again,
Margaret

Margaret,
This looks like your Neil & Janet, got this from an OPR,
Neil Livingstone, occ. shoemaker, resident Barony, Glasgow married Janet Cameron, resident Glasgow, on 10 Nov. 1844, GROS data 644/01 0420 0785 Glasgow.
I think there was also a Duncan somewhere who was a shoemaker.
Son Duncan b. 1845, nothing further on him at present, I'll have a look in the local Greenock papers, see if they have anything,
John

Hi Margaret,
Youve obviously done alot of research and are quite familiar with the genealogy of this family. Nice job. I havent been able to locate Dalemaig mentioned in both the 1851 and 1861 Census in Donald's census info. I assume it to have been on the Isle of Seil or neighbouring Easdale but really dont know for certain. There is also the possibility that there is another spelling I am not aware of. So far I have not found it on any map of Scotland. Perhaps some historian from the Slate Islands might have some familiarity with this village and it's location.
regards,
Donald

Hi John,
Perhaps your son-in-law might know someone who might have heard of a village called Dalemaig on one of the Slate Islands in Kilbrandon Parish and know where it is or was.
regards,
Donald

Thanks John, that's "my" Duncan - my Gt Grandfather. Born 1845 Greenock died 9 November 1904 Oban He was a shoemaker also. He married Margaret McGillivray on 4 September 1847 in Tobermory. At that time they were both living at Drumlang, nr Salen, Mull. Duncan had a brother Alexander, born c1849 at Largs and a sister, Euphemia born c1855 died 8 March 1881 Lochgilphead, not married. Haven't found anything about Alexander yet.

Re: Duncan Livingston, slate quarrier at Balvicar
Hi Donald,
I'm afraid I can't find Dalemnig/Dalemaig either. I've looked through all the old maps and books that I have to no avail. Given that Donald worked as a gardener at Ardmaddy I wonder if that was the name of a house or hamlet attached to Ardmaddy. Ardmaddy was a large estate down near South Cuan Ferry and you will see the entry for Donald and his family on the 1871 census is the one before South Cuan Ferry.
I'm going up there at the start of April for a couple of weeks so I'll ask at the heritage centre and I'll keep my eyes peeled for names of houses as we drive around.
Kind regards
Margaret
