John J. McLay of Ohio

Post by Kyle MacLea »

Apparently the state of Ohio was looking for any surviving family.

"Id#: 0618647
Name: McLay, John J.
Date: Aug 20 1954
Source: Source unknown; Cleveland, Ohio Necrology File, Reel #132.
Notes: McLay, John J., passed away Aug. 16, 1954 admitted to Cleveland State Hospital 1945 and transferred to Cambridge, Ohio 5 months later; white, 83, single
Anyone Interested call Cambridge State Hospital, A. T. Hopwood, M. D., Supt, Cambridge State Hospital."

I heard this on the MCLAY listserv on Rootsweb. We get so little discussion of McLays here, but should get more! So I encourage anyone with MCLAY/MCCLAY/MCCLEA/etc queries to contact us and see what we can help you find about your family!

Hello Kyle,

I took a look at the U.S. census to see if I could find the John J. McLay of Ohio. I realize no one is looking for him at this time, I guess I was just curious.
He did turn up in the 1910 U.s. census for county Cuychaga, Cleveland Ohio.
John J. McLay immigrated in 1890, born Scotland, he was a machinist in a factory, single and a boarder.
While I was going through the U.S.census I found there were many McLay families verses the spelling McLea.

In the 1800 U.S. census there were 3 families under the spelling McLey in the state of Pennsylvania. Michael McLey, 3 in household, a widow McLey, 3 in household, John McLey, 6 in household,

In 1810 there was a Moses McLay, and a Robert Mclay both in Franklin county,Pennsylvania.
2 in North Carolina, a Appleton McLay, 5 in household, and James McLay 8 in household.

In 1820 there were 3 households, J. McLay in Richmond county, Georgia. a Phany McLay in Jackson county, Georgia, and a Robert McLay in Hamilton County Cincinnati Ohio.

For the following U.S. Census I will just list the McLay people who were born Scotland living in the states. If there is further interest with other McLay's birth places I will give information on the others.

Good summary of McLay info in the censuses, Jewel. Worthwhile to anyone looking for these families!

Surprisingly few families, really! It's always interesting to look at this cross-sectional info. Thanks!
