Livingstons at the Battle of Waterloo? Napoleonic Wars

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

Hi All,

The 98th Argyllshire Regiment (later renamed the 91st Argyllshire Regiment in 1798) participated in the Battle of Waterloo) I am told. I am not sure how many highland Livingstons were at the Battle of Waterloo but it was understood by Dr. Livingstone's grandson Hubert Livingstone Wilson that all of Dr. Livingstone's Uncles were there. In fact his Uncle Charles Livingston a aspiring young clerk at the Montieth family cotton mill was forced into the British Navy by a press gang and subsequently died somewhere in the mediterian sea. Presumingly the others served in the British Army. Dr. Livingstone indicated that some of his Uncles served in the Army during the Napoleonic Wars.Interestingly a list prior to the Napoleonic Wars of the 91st Argyllshire Regiments records a John Livingston and Duncan Livingston as enlisted men in the regiment circa 1794 but this is not likely Dr. Livingtone's Uncles John b. 1777 and Duncan b. abt. 1783? Those names were very common amongst highland Livingstons in the late 1700's and since Dr. Livingston's grandfather Neil Livingston had left highland Argyllshire in 1792 it is presumed that his sons were all living in the lowland Lanarkshire. I am wondering however if Dr. Livingstone's Uncles John Livingston b.1777 and Duncan Livingston b.1783? might have served in a highland regiment or another British regiment for several years during the Napoleonic Wars and specifically at the Battle of Waterloo.

Certainly locating the names of those Livingstons who served in the Napoleonic Wars is an interesting area of study for anyone who is patientably able to locate these records and who has lots of spare time on their hands.

regards,

Donald
