Angus Livingstone& Margaret (Hall/McPhail), Shiaba, Mull

Post by jmlivingstone »

Posts on Angus & Margaret appear to be getting a bit messy, with bits of information spread in various areas of other topics, hopefully it can all be brought together at this location, & will make life easier for everyone to check out the contents.

Below is a brief timeline on Angus, parts of this are known to be correct, some are speculation at present,

1.1775 - Angus b. abt. 1775 @ Shiaba, Mull..

2.1779- Census 1779 has Neil, occ. keeper, sons Donald & Angus, plus wife & 4 daughters, Neil is possibly father of Angus b. abt. 1775.

3.1787/8 - Angus joins army, probably before 1787-8, he would probably have to be around 12 years old to enlist, he was out of the army with a pension by 1804-5, this would just cover the minimum 12 year service requirement to be classed as a Chelsea Pensioner at that time.(Update; We now know that he was actually a Kilmainham pensioner, & was discharged from the Fencibles about 21 Dec. 1801, due to wounds sustained to his hand during the Irish Rebellion, his discharge was recorded at Chelsea Jan. 1802).

4. 1802 - Angus found as a patient in Kilmainham Military Hospital, Dublin.(Update; Discharged to Kells, County Meath, about 40 miles from Dublin, about 21 Dec. 1801)

5.1804/5- Angus marries Margaret Hall (McPhail ?? ) probably 1804-5 possibly earlier, Margarets birthplace unknown, listed in some records as “foreign places”, possibly her father was also in the military. Most records seem to think her family were also from Mull originally. (Update; As Angus left the Fencibles late 1801 - early 1802, it is unlikely Margaret had any connection with the military, now looking for wedding in Glasgow).

6.1805– First daughter b. Glasgow, Angus working in textile industry.

7.1806/7– Family return to Mull, rest of family born on Mull.

8.1824/29– No further family known to have been born in the period from 1824-29, (Update; Jane b. 18 Jan. 1829) where was Angus in this period, possibly back in the army ??

9.1840- Somewhere around this time, Angus, Margaret & some family members move from Mull to Uragaig, Colonsay.

10.1841- Scottish census of 1841 has Angus, Margaret & some family members, plus the illusive James, all resident at Uragaig, Colonsay. Their son John & wife Agnes had a son Neil, b. abt. 10.06.1842 on Colonsay, so far not found out if they were also resident at Uragaig, Colonsay. (Update; At some point some of the family crossed from Colonsay to Islay, & later, mainly to Glasgow & Greenock).

11.1841- Neither Angus or Margaret have been found in any records since 1841. (Update; According to a note on his discharge papers from the Fencibles, Angus died Paisley, Scotland on 30 Oct. 1847).

Below is further info on Cirsty, daughter of Angus & Margaret,

Attached is the result of forward research on the siblings of John Livingstone born 1805.

We previously found that Cirsty Livingston was born on Iona , Argyll, in Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon parish , and baptized there on 29 October 1809 . Parents Angus Livingstone, and Margaret Hall, were then resident at Siaba in the parish.

The Parish register for Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon has an entry for the marriage of Cirsty Livingston and Peter McArthur on 18 December, 1827. They were both resident within the Parish - Cirsty at Creich, and Peter at Caildrean.

Christie and Peter had two children. Ann McArthur was baptised on 17 October, 1829 and John McArthur was baptized on 18 September, 1831 . Father Peter McArthur was the crofter at Creich by this time. On the 1829 record his first name is recorded as Patrick, the old name for Peter.

Mother Cirsty died at some time between 1831 to 1833 . The Iona Parish register then shows that Peter McArthur, crofter at Creich, married again, to a Flora McDonald on 12 March, 1833. Peter and his second wife Flora had three children , namely Dugald, Niel and Flory. Then the mother Flora McDonald died, about 1840.

At the 1841 Census , we find Peter McArthur , 30 year crofter at Cregachait , now twice widowed . With him are the two children from his first marriage to Cirsty, namely 12 year Ann, 10 year John, and three children from his marriage to Flora , namely 6-year Dugald, 4-year Niel, and 6-month infant Flory.

The year following this census, on 30 January 1842 , Peter McArthur, crofter at Creich (possible abbreviation for Cregachait) married for the third time –to Isabella MacLean. Their marriage was recorded in the Iona Parish register.

At the 1851 census, we see Peter and Isobel living at Creagachait, Iona, with nine children , from 20- year John, now working as an agricultural labourer , to 2-year James. The four youngest children from this marriage of Peter and Isobel are 9-year Donald, 6-year Mary, 4-year Eliza and 2-year James. Also present is a 13 year Christian McArthur, daughter of Flora who was not recorded on the 1841 census. Peter’s eldest child Ann McArthur (born 1829) is no longer living with the family.

Peter & some members of the family eventually emigrated to Australia, I have been in touch with two of his descendants in Australia recently,

John.

Hi John,

Thatis good to have all that info summarized in this way. I would only add the next year 1842 in Colonsay a James Livingston of Colonsay married a Margaret McMillan and this James and margaret a few years later left Colonsay for Upper Canada (ONtario,Canada) eventually settling in Arthur Township,Wellington County, Ontario. (Also note in 1841 a McMillan family was living with old ANgus according to the census of that year.)Whatever mystery there may be regarding Jame's family connection to old Angus of Uragaig, we should note that Margaret's obituary in Canada years later confirms she and James 1842 marriage and the Colonsay origins. The family is definitely a part of that small group of Colonsay Livingstons in the 1800's just cant prove how James is connected to ANgus without a birth/baptism record to be sure.
Debbie has also found info that her Colonsay James born in the early 1800's lived and was born in Mull though it is not sourced from a parish record just someone's family research. It does however stand to reason and the DNA testing of Debbies husband does put him in our Parker Livingstone Group with an apparent large Livingston group with Mull/neighbouring Morvern origins it would seem. My Livington ancestor stated in his 1812 marriage entry before he left the highlands for British North America that he and his wife were born in Morvern Parish and since Morvern is just a quick swim across from Mull it is not surprising that my Livingstons would be somewhat related somewhere down the ancestral line to some of these Mull Livingstons.

Hi Donald,

I'm going to try to get everything pertaining to Angus & Margaret copied in here, I'll get a family tree/timeline in, probably tomorrow, for the family from Angus up to my father & his brothers & sisters. There are one or two things in the family tree that I am still doubtful about, I'll probably highlite these areas in italics or in red.

I'm still almost convinced that James at Uragaig, is some sort of relative, it's too much of a coincidence that Angus & Margaret, James, John & Agnes, were all on Colonsay around 1841-42 & that James was not related some how or another.

Hi JOhn,

Does the Kilfinichen parish record from 1809 refer to Angus Livingston as a pensioner? Interesting he was pensioned off several years prior to the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Was that due to be wounded I wonder? He must of left his company abruptly and not because of his age If he was severely wounded and unable to fight any longer he would have received a pension. He was still reasonbly young in the early 1800's. He born sometime between 1775 and 1780 depending on different sources.

Further information

Agnes Edmiston was born abt. 1797 in Blackburn, West Lothian, her parents were John Edmiston and Catherine Mitchell. Agnes died at Stirling on 22nd.Nov. 1868, her death was registered by her son Andrew Mitchell Livingstone.

In the 1851 census, John and Agnes were living at Esknish, Islay, in the parish of Kilmeny. John is listed as a 55 year old hand loom weaver, Agnes is listed as being 54 years old. Two children are residing with them, Gavin(e), at 16 years old, apprenticed to his father, and Neil, who is listed as having been bed ridden for at least a full year. Given the birth places of the children, the family spent time in Blackburn, West Lothian, and Colonsay, prior to moving to Islay.

John livingstone, woollen and cotton weaver, died in Kilmeny, Islay on 6th.July 1858, death was registered by his son James. Johns age is given as 52 years, and his parents are listed as Angus, who was a Chelsea Pensioner, and Margaret Hall/McPhail. John is buried in Kilmeny burial ground.
Johns place of death was Tirvagan, Kilmeny, his widow Agnes is listed in the 1861 census, at Tirvagan, with her son John, 28 years old, and her grandson Andrew.

There appears to be a discrepancy between Johns birth date on the 18521 census, and on his death certificate, it would appear the death certificate is the more accurate document. Kilfinchen and Kilvickeon parish register has a baptism entry for John on 7th.Feb. 1805, parents Angus Livingstone in Kilpatrick, and Margaret Hall/McPhail.

It appears Hall could be Margarets mothers maiden name, apparently it was quite common to use this instead of the paternal name.

1. 1775 - Angus b. abt. 1775 @ Shiaba, Mull.
2. 1779- Census 1779 has Neil, occ. keeper, sons Donald & Angus, plus wife & 4 daughters, Neil is possibly father of Angus b. abt. 1775.
3. 1787-8 - Angus joins army, probably before 1787-8, he would probably have to be around 12 years old to enlist, as he was out of the army with a pension by 1804-5, this would just cover the minimum 12 year service requirement to be classed as a Chelsea Pensioner at that time.
4. 1804-5 - Angus marries Margaret Hall (McPhail ?? ) probably 1804-5 possibly earlier, Margarets birthplace unknown, listed in some records as “foreign places”, possibly her father was also in the military. Most records seem to think her family were also from Mull originally.
5. 1805 – First daughter b. Glasgow, Angus working in textile industry.
6. 1806-7 – Family return to Mull, rest of family born on Mull.
7. 1824-29 – No further family born from 1824-29, where was Angus in this period, possibly back in the army ??
8. 1840 - Somewhere around this time, Angus, Margaret & some family members move from Mull to Uragaig, Colonsay.
9. 1841 - Scottish census of 1841 has Angus, Margaret & some family members resident at Uragaig, Colonsay. Their son John & wife Agnes had a son Neil, b. abt. 10.06.1842 on Colonsay, so far not found out if they were also resident at Uragaig, Colonsay

Hi Donald,

Sorry I took so long to reply, I'm at home at present

Angus was listed as a military pensioner on the OPR when his first daughter was born in 1805, then later, there is a gap of around five years, where no children are born, I often wonder if Angus possibly did a further period in the military. I doubt if we will ever know the real story.

I think I may have tracked down another of their daughters, Jane, far from sure at the moment, someone sent me the info, & I then had a look on Scotlands People, it could be correct info, but I have grave doubts at present.

I'm back in the middle east next week, so I'll have more time to spend on researching Jane, & the rest of the family,

Hi John,
Heres a thought.
There was a Treaty of Amiens in 1802 between the Revolutionary Government of France and the English, but peace didnt last long and they were back at it with the French by 1803 I think. Maybe Angus was wounded before 1802 pensioned off and was not fit to serve a few years later during the next period of conflict with France, the Napoleonic Wars. It only states he was a "pensioner" in the records doesnt it?
Perhaps he served during this earlier period of conflict between the French and English and was wounded. Then he ended up back in Scotland where he married Margaret Hall around 1800.

No problem I myself am off for some desperately needed rest and relaxation with the wife at a lake for a couple of days. Hope are having a fine time with your Livingstone kin and friends back home in Scotland.

It's getting too quiet around here at the moment, so can anyone help on this, Hugh below is a son of Angus& Margaret Livingstone, he last appears in the 1861 census for Glasgow, he also appears in the 1841 census at Colonsay, after 1861, the family disappear.

He also signed his sister Anns death certificate at Glasgow in 1860.

Hugh appears in Glasgow Postal Directories, he appears to have worked his way up from working on manufacture of wooden equipment for the weaving industry, to being a supplier of looms & associated equipment, so possibly if he did emigrate, he would be involved in supply of similar equipment.

I have recently had correspondence with someone in Canada, who reckons Hugh possibly emigrated to Canada, names & dates kind of tally, but nothing definite as yet, anyone have any suggestions ?

John.

Hugh, born abt.06th. June 1819 at Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon, last known at 23, James Street, Calton, Glasgow, employed as a weaving utensil maker.
Married to Jane Shannon??, born abt. 1820, at Fortuilham, Invernesshire??, they had three children in 1861 census. (Not 100% sure of wife name being correct)
They also a son Hugh, who died 13.09.1859 age 13 years.
Cannot find Hugh on any further UK/Scotland census after 1861.
1861 Scotland Census,address as above, has the following;
Hugh, 40 years old, weaving utensil maker.
Jean, 41 years old.
Margaret, 17 years old.
Robert, 12 years old.
Duncan, 3 years old.
