1750's Baptisms Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

Some early highland "Livingston" baptismal entries from Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish with Highland Macleas referring to themselves as Livingstons
and some evidence of highland Livingstons established by the 1750's if not before as slate quarriers in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish, Argyllshire. These Livingstons may be kin to the highland Macleas/Maconleas mentioned in the Earl of Breadalbane list of tenants in the Isle of Luing vicinity in 1730. These Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish records that commence in the year 1753 do not appear to be complete by any means for the area and we are no doubt there is some information missing on Livingstons and other families. These selected baptismal records represent most of Livingston families that today survive in the old records for the 1753-1754 period in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish. A few years prior I would assume had these families been in any baptismal records they would quite conceivably been recorded by the parish clergyman as Mcleas or Maconleas. Unfortunately 1753 is as far back as surviving records go for Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish records.

July 22th 1753
Malcolm Livingston tenant in Torsa and Anna McDiarmid his spouse had their daughter baptised and called Sarah
( Torsa on Torsa or Torsay Island is near Isle of Luing in Western Argyllshire)
May 10th 1753
Donald Livingstone slate quarrier in Esdale and Sarah Fleming his spouse had their son baptised and called John
January 15th 1754
Duncan Livingstone slate quarrier in Esdale and Katrina Macpherson his spouse had their daughter baptised and called Christian
(Esdale (Easdale being one of the Slate Islands in Western Argyllshire. The Easdale slate operation began around 1745 and housing was built for the workers)
January 28th 1754
Dugald Livingstone tenant in Lockabuy (Lockbuy) and Mary McDiarmid his spouse had their daughter baptised and called Mary
January 28th 1754
Donald Livingstone in Lockabuy (Leccabuy) and Christian McEwen his spouse had their son baptised and called Neil
(I think it is spelt Lecibuy in the Earl of Breadalbane Rental information from 1730 and there are apparently Mconlea tenants recorded there at that time. Not to be confused with Lochbuy in Mull.Leccabuy is or was located on the east coast of Isle of Luing )
