Livingstons of Aldborough Township,Elgin County Ontario

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

John Livingston born abt. 1782 in S.land presumingly Scotland settled land of Colonel Thomas Talbot in Aldborough Township,Elgin County, Upper Canada in 1820 according to a list of Scottish settlers dated March 20,1820.
He then appears in the 1842 Census for Aldborough Township,Elgin County, Canada West (Ontario,Canada) where a John Livingston Farmer is recorded that year. The 1861 Census for Aldborough Township, Elgin County includes an elderly John Livingston widower age 79 born abt. 1782 in what first appears as Iland but closer inspection of the original document seems to be an abbreviation of Scotland by the census taker as S.land as Ireland in his census transcriptions is written simply as Ireland.

Later the 1871 Ontario Census Aldborough Township,Elgin County West lists an Alexander Livingston age 50 born abt. 1821/1820 in Ontario, Free Presbyterian Church member possibly a son of the above mentioned Elgin County Scottish pioneer John Livingston. Colonel Talbot an aristocrat and friend of the Duke of Wellington left the Army around 1800 and received a grant of 5000 acres of land in Upper Canada with the intention of establishing settlers. The Townships of Aldborough,Dunwich,South Dorchester and North Yarmouth on his land were largely settled by Argyleshire highlanders.

John Livingston possibly came from Argyllshire as did other Scottish folk residing on the Talbot Settlement. The 1861 Ontario Census for Aldborough Township, Elgin County includes an elderly John Livingston widower age 79 born abt.1782 that after looking at the original census document I suspect this is almost certainly the above mentioned Talbot Settlement pioneer.

Hi John,
I am bringing new life to an old post from 2011 regarding a John Livingston born abt. 1782 in Argyll.
I had found about old John Livingston of Colonel Talbot's settlement in Elgin County, Ontario Canada from an old book published in the late 1800's or early 1900's on pioneer Scotsman in Canada that I picked up an used book store about 10 years ago or thereabouts. There was a name John Livingston included in an old list from the year 1820 of early Ontario settlers who settled on Colonel Tabot's land in Elgin County.
As an update to the previous message regarding John Livingston Sr. of Aldborough Township, Elgin County, Canada West (later Ontario, Canada), this is the last Canadian census info regarding pioneer Talbot Settlement settler John Livingston Sr.
1861 Census of John Livingston Sr. Aldborough Township, Elgin County, Canada West (later Ontario, Canada)
John Livingston widower age 79 born S.land (Scotland not Ireland)
Archibald Livingston age 30 born Canada
Flora Livingston age 30 born Canada born
John Livingston age 27 born Canada born 1833 (June 30, 1833)
John's son Archibald married Lily Patterson Sept. 7, 1862 and their marriage record indicates that John's wife was Margaret McKellar.
I assume that old John Livingston died sometime between 1861 and 1871 as I have not located him in the 1871 Ontario, Canada Census.

John Livingston Senior's son John Jr. born in 1833 is buried in New Glasgow Pioneer Cemetery in New Glasgow, Elgin County, Ontario with his wife Sarah Munro.
John Livingston b. June 30, 1833
died Dec. 24, 1908
Sarah Munro
born November 13, 1843
died December 18, 1872

John Livingston was married to Margaret McKellar. This John Livingston became known to me only because I purchased an old book on Scottish Settlement in Canada written in the late 1800's or early 1900's that mentioned him in an 1820 list of original settlers who settled on Colonel Talbots large land grant that included parts of Elgin County where John settled early on in 1820. That makes him one of the early highland Argyll settlers in Upper Canada later Ontario, though my ancestor Miles Livingston arrived in York County, Upper Canada a few years earlier in 1815 and Miles first arrived in Hudsons Bay Territory, Upper Canada before that in 1812.

Here is an 1879 account by a George Munro reflecting upon the early days of the pioneers of Aldborough County in which he states:
"In September of 1819 from Argyllshire landed at the mouth of the said creek (16 Mile Creek) upwards of thirty-five families who were located near their friends and Countrymen. In September of 1820 from the same shire and same place landed twenty-five families more a few only remaining in Aldborough..."

It would seem that in addition to John Livingston born abt. 1782 in Argyll, Scotland another Livingston thought to be related to him a Neil Livingston b.1784 and his wife Janet McNair and his family also settled in the early 1800's in ALdborough, Elgin County with some of their children born in Aldborough. One researcher states that a John Livingston born in 1782 is the older brother of this Neil and that they are both the sons of a Duncan Livingston who lived in Craignish parish, Argyll, but the Craignish Parish records only record one John Livingston apparently born and baptized in 1782 in Craignish but his father is recorded as James Livingston of Craignish Parish. Craignish is about 25 miles south of Oban in Argyll and about 18 miles from Lochgilphead. In any event whether they were brothers or cousins they were both apparently from Craignish Parish and both apparently settled at Aldborough Township, in Elgin County, Upper Canada in the early 1820's as settlers in the Talbot settlement. I found some information regarding Neil Livingston who married Janet McNair. Neil did not apparently live long after arriving in Elgin County and may have died as early as the 1830's.His widow Janet McNair and some of the family can later be found by the 1851 Canada West Census in Mosa Township, Middlesex County. The 1813 marriage record of Neil and Janet indicates that Neil's father was the late Duncan Livingston and that Neil was of "Aird" or at least living in Airds at the time of his marriage in 1813. Is that in Craignish Parish where Neil and Janet were married?

Hi All,

More info on Neil Livingston his wife Janet McNair and family. Neil Livingston and Janet McNair. Neil Livingston said to be the son of Dun. (Duncan) Livingston of Craignish Parish, Argyll. According to a record from that Parish, Neil Livingston son of Duncan Livingston was born at Kilmory Scarba in Craignish Parish and baptized on May 9, 1784. The old parish church was known as Kilmory church after the old name for the Parish. Neil Livingston and his wife Janet McNair (Dec. 7, 1794-July 1,1854) were married in Glassary Parish, Argyll on Dec. 23, 1813. Their marriage record confirms that Neil Livingston is the son of the late Dun. or Duncan Livingston who had apparently lived on Scarba Island in Craignish Pairsh, Argyll. In 1820 they Neil Livingston came to Canada with his wife Janet McNair and their eldest children and settled in Aldorough, Elgin County, Upper Canada (Ontario,Canada). Later in 1829 Neil, Janet and their children resettled in Mosa Township, Middlesex County, Upper Canada locating at Concession 9 north half of Lot 5. Neil Livingston is said to have mysteriously disappeared in 1830's and died and the children were raised by their mother. Neil's wife Janet McNair died on July 1, 1854 is buried at Kilmartin Cemetery in Kilmartin Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada.

I am not certain some of the birthdates of the sons were entirely accurate looking at their ages given in the Middlesex County census records so it is still a bit of a work in progress.

Neil Livingston of Craignish Parish, Arygll and Janet McNair of Glassary Parish, Argyll were married in Dec. 23, 1813 in Craignish Parish and the marriage record indicates that Neil Livingston is the son of the late Duncan Livingston and that Neil at the time of his marriage is residing at "Aird" in Craignish Parish near Ancient Kilmory Chapel ruins and Craignish Castle. To the west of Aird is Scarba Island mentioned in Neil's 1784 baptism record as where he was living at the time of his baptism. Here is some maps indicating where Aird and Aird farm and a 19th century map referring to the location as "Aird of Kinuachdrach" in Craignish Parish.

This map also shows "Scarba Island" where Neil Livingston was born in 1784 the son of Dun. Duncan Livingston and on this Island in Craignish Parish is a Kilmory Chapel. Perhaps it was around here where Neil was born as his baptism record indicates the probable place of birth as Kilmory Scarba. The older ordnance survey map from the 1800's also shows Scarba Island. Most researchers state that Neil Livingston of Craignish Parish who married Janet McNair was born in 1792 to Malcolm Livingston and Isabel McDougall but careful examination of their original 1813 marriage document indicates that the Neil Livingston who married Janet McNair according the Church of Scotland minister was Neil son of the late Duncan Livingston.

Hi All,
This is a new update regarding John Livingston Sr. b. abt. 1782 in Scotland who settled in Aldborough Township, Elgin County, Upper Canada (Ontario) in the early 1800's. Most recently I established that two of the sons of pioneer Aldborough Township, Elgin County, Ontario settler John Livingston Sr. b. 1782 likely in Craignish Parish, Scotland and his wife Margaret McKellar, in the latter part of the 1800's settled in Michgian. The eldest son Alexander ended up in Tuscola County Michigan in 1880's and another son Archibald Livingston ended up in Sanilac County, Michigan. One son John Livingston Jr. remained in Elgin County, Ontario where he died in 1872. Many of my own relatives ended up in Michigan in the latter part of the 1800's and there seems to have been a large influx of Canadians settling into Michigan, USA at that time.
