Solomon Livingston of Gorbals,Lanarkshire

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

To help assist descendants of Solomon Livingston in the future I am reposting a few earlier postings under the title Solomon Livingston of Gorbals,Lanarkshire. The next one is from our frequent contributor John Livingstone.

As Hugh earlier importantly pointed out there were in fact two Solomon Livingstons born in the County of Argyll, Scotland in the 1820's but only one is recorded in the parish records and that was Solomon Livingston son of Neil Livingston and Margaret McColl of Kilinver Parish. This however is not the Solomon Livingston born in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish and according to the 1861 Census was born on the Isle of Luing, one of Argyllshire`s slate islands who later settled at Gorbals Lanarkshire with his first wife Catharine MacLachlan of Jura Parish,Argyllshire by the late 1840`s and eventually became a tailor. After the death of his first wife Catharine, in 1854 he married Euphemia Murray. His first wife Catharine Maclachlan was born in Jura Parish and probably was connected to the McLachlan family that were born in Jura Parish on the Island of Belnuhua some of whom were slate quarriers there. Belnahua Island and nearby Cullipool,Isle of Luing in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish had both Livingstons and Maclachlans living in close proximity to each other. The information from the 1845 marriage of Solomon Livingston and Catharine Maclachlan only tells us that they were married in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan Parish possibly on the Isle of Luing and that Solomon was born in Kilbrandon Parish and Catharine in Jura Parish.

Jimmy/Donald,

Info from Scotlands People on Solomon;

Solomon first married Catherine MacLachlan at Kilbrandon & Kilchattan, 09 Feb. 1845.

Family - Agnes b. 10 May 1847 Gorbals, Glasgow.

Margaret b. 08 Dec.1850 Barony, Lanarkshire.

Second wife, Euphamia Murray, from Barrhead, sometimes shows as Paisley, they married at Barony, Lanarkshire, 12 Nov. 1854.

Family - Elizabeth b. 01 Feb. 1856 at Milton, Glasgow.

Donald b. 21 Jan. 1858 at Hutchestown, Glasgow.

No luck in finding Donald Livingston & Agnes Stevenson as yet, parents keep showing as Neil Livingstone & Margaret McColl, even in Scotlands People,

John

Solomon Livingston died Feb.15,1886 age given 51 in Gorbals District, Lanarkshire. First wife Catharine Mclachlan, Second wife Euphemia Murray. Parents Donald Livingston farmer and Agnes Stevenson deceased.
No birth or baptismal records exist but I assume from this he was born abt. 1825 and according to the 1861 Scottish census he was born on the Isle of Luing in Kilbrandon and Kilchattan parish,Argyllshire. The 1861 Scottish Census also suggests that Solomon was born abt. 1825.

Hi All,

While there does not seem to have a lot of Stevensons on the Isle of Luing and neighbouring Isle of Seil there was at least one family as far back as the 1730's. The Rentals of the Earl of Breadalbane's Estate for the year 1730 include a Robert Stevenson occupation slater located at Bardrissooh,Isle of Luing. I also noticed with some interest that on October 25, 1828 a Barbara Stevenson and William Livingston were wed in Kilchattan Parish. The entry does not specify where in Kilchattan parish. This a few years after the birth of Solomon Livingston around 1825 in Kilchattan Parish on the Isle of Luing to Donald Livingston and Agnes Stevenson. Perhaps some of these later Stevensons are connected to the family of this 18th century slater Robert Stevenson residing on the Isle of Luing. By the time of the 1841 Census there werent many Stevensons except at Dunish and Balvicar in Kilchattan Parish and no trace of Solomon's father Donald Livingston and his wife Agnes Stevenson.

regards,

Donald
