Emigrants to Canada

Emigrant ships to Nova Scotia: "Economy" 1819 & "St Lawrence"

Very little is known about the origins or even the names of
passengers on the ship "Economy" other than 285 of them were on board
when the ship sailed from Tobermory on 4th August 1819 and all were
landed "in good health and spirits", together with 4 children born
during the passage, at Pictou, Nova Scotia, on 4th October. However,
from the little information that has been found, it is known that the
ship carried passengers from Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, and probably
elsewhere in the Highlands and Western Isles. Eugene Quigley in
Canada has searched out what information is available about
passengers from Coll or Tiree, and his findings are now available on
the Emigrant Ships page of the Tiree Genealogy and Coll Genealogy websites.

More is known about passengers on the ship "St Lawrence", which
sailed from Tobermory on 12th July 1828 for Cape Breton with the last
residents of Rum and people from Muck, Coll and probably
elsewhere. Their names are known from the passenger list, but their
origins and what happened to them in Canada are not known for
many. Again, Eugene Quigley has searched out what information is
available about passengers on the "St Lawrence", and his findings
have been added to the passenger list on the websites.

It would be good if we could fill in the very big gaps in our
knowledge about these early emigrations to Canada, so any information
will be welcomed and acknowledged.

Hmmmm...let me see if I can find anything. On my Dad's side my grandmother was a Dockendorff and my grandfather's mother was also a Dockendorff. They were closely related. I saw this http://www.colonsay.info/text/Shaw%20family.htm and I may be able to find something.

Another place you might look is the rural community of Economy, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. It may not be a coincidence they called this community Economy.

I found an entry where Duncan Johnson was born on the Economy in 1818. I believe he lived in River John, Nova Scotia.
