Donald,

I think Wayne submitted 2-3 posts around 2011, I don't think there were any further posts, I'll try e-mailing him, see if he can supply any further info on Duncans family,

John

Hi John,

Yes it would interesting to know about Duncan Livingston, Angus Livingston's son that went to Australia. I have found some entries by officials in Scotland for the year 1847 commenting on the sickness and disease among the highlanders that year. It may be that both Angus and his wife died during the years 1846-1850. Neither of them appears in the 1851 Census. Many of the deaths during this period were the young or the elderly.

regards,

Donald

Hi John,

Another Argyllshire Livingston family that settled in Australia during the 1840's to make note of. Malcolm Livingston a Shepherd born abt. 1801 or 1803 who resided at Blaich in Kilmallie Parish in Ardgour, Argyll and his wife Catharine McDonald born abt. 1801 in Kilmonivaig, Invernesshire and their children left their croft in Blaich, Ardgour in 1849, sailed abroad the passenger vessel, the Blonde arriving Dec. 27, 1849 in New South Wales, Australia. There does not seem to be any way of determining this from the available parish records but I am wondering if was so how related to Malcolm Livingston Jr. who arrived in Pictou, Nova Scotia with his family in 1791 and had also resided in Kilmallie Parish, Ardgour. Malcolm seems to a popular name amongst the Kilmallie Parish Livingstons. Here is their family information for the Malcolm Livingston and Catharine McDonald family that later settled in 1849 in Australia:

Malcolm Livingston born abt. 1801 0r 1803 in Blaich, Kilmallie Parish? Argyllshire, Scotland died January 24, 1850 in Maitland, NSW, Australia. His wife Catharine McDonald or McDonnell was born abt.1804 in Kilmonivaig, Inverness-shire and died June 17, 1885 in Grafton, NSW, Australia. They were married in Kilmonivaig, Inverness-shire on July 15, 1829.

Known children were:

1. Mary Livingston born April 20, 1830 in Ardgour Parish, Argyll

2. Anne Jane Livingston born Sept. 25, 1831 in Ardgour Parish, Argyll died Dec. 9, 1922 in New South Wales. married Patrick Frederick Campbell Feb. 26, 1857 in NSW.

3. Flora Livingston born 1832 in Ardgour Parish, Argyll died 1861 in NSW married Michael McDonald Jan. 6, 1851 in NSW

4. Hugh Livingston born May 3, 1833 Ardgour Parish, Argyll d. March 12, 1926 Codrington, NSW Buried in Coraki, NSW m. Ellen McPhee Sept 12, 1860 Crofton, NSW

5. Angus Livingston b. March 26, 1835 Ardgour Parish, Argyll

6. John Livingston b. 1836 in Ardgour Parish, Argyll d. Aug. 21, 1901 in Coraki, NSW

7. Anne Livingston b. July 6, 1837 Ardgour Parish, Argyll d. April 9, 1935 Maclean, NSW

8. Donald Livingston b. April 18, 1841 Ardgour Parish, Argyll d. July 5, 1917 Coraki, NSW

9. Alexander Livingston b. 1843 in Ardgour Parish, Argyll

10. Allan Livingston b. 1845 in Ardgour Parish, Argyll d. March 18, 1910 in South Grafton, NSW

1841 Census Blaich, Kilmallie Parish, Ardgour, Argyll
Malcolm Livingston age 40 agricultural labourer
Catharine Livingston age 40
Mary Livingston age 11
Ann Livingston age 9
Flora Livingston age 9
Ewen Livingston age 8
John Livingston age 6
Ann Livingston age 3
Angus Livingston age 2
N. K. Livingston age 3 wks.

What do we know about the Livingston of Blaich, Kilmallie Parish, Argyll circa 1840's

We know that there was one other Livingston family residing at Blaich, Kilmallie Parish that is recorded in the 1841 Census at the time that Malcolm, his wife Catharine and their children were residing there. Duncan Livingston age 80 a widower and agricultural labourer was residing at Blaich born abt. 1761. apparently with his children. He is quite possibly an Uncle of the Malcolm Livingston b. abt. 1803 who left Blaich for Australia in 1849.

1841 Census Blaich, Kilmallie Parish, Ardgour, Argyll

Duncan Livingston age 80 agricultural labourer b. abt. 1761
Allan Livingston age 44 b. abt. 1797
Margaret Livingston age 35 b. abt. 1806
Malcolm Livingston age 25 b. abt. 1816
Catharine Livingston age 20 b. abt. 1821
John Livingston age 15 b. abt. 1826

This is an early Livingston settler who settled in New South Wales in the year 1838

Lachlan Livingston son of Archibald Livingston and Ann McInnes of Lettermore baptized Feb. 9, 1811 Kilninian Parish, Mull, Argyll He also had older brother John Livingston baptized May 20th, 1809 according to the Kilninian parish, Mull Church of Scotland records.

I wonder if this could be the same Lachlan Livingston that settled in Australia in 1838? It states at the time of his departure in 1838 he is residing in the Parish of Kilmuir, County of Argyll. I think it actually in Inverness-shire. Also Lachlan's mother is referred to as Agnes McInnes instead of Ann McInnes but I think the family moved from Lettermore as did Lachlan and they could have been residing in another parish in 1838 at time of Lachlan's departure. My hunch is that Lachlan was born an baptized in Lettermore, Mull and the family moved.

Lachlan Livingston Shoemaker Parish of Kilmuir, ? County of Argyll Scotland son of Archibald Livingston and Agnes? McInnes Embarked 1838 aboard the vessel Minerva Age at time of embarkation Feb. 14, 1838 is 26

Lachlan Livingston m. Margaret McPhee in 1839 in New South Wales
Lachlan Livingston died in 1852 Butterwick, Hinton, Middlethorpe, Seaham, NSW.

Children were:

1. Angus Ewing Livingston b. May 19, 1840 District of Patterson, Houghton, NSW

2. Archibald Livingston b. Oct. 30, 1846 Houghton, District of Patterson, Durham County, NSW

3. Margaret Livingston b. June 4, 1849 District of Patterson, Durham County, NSW

4. Flora Livingston b. May 15, 1851 Clarence Town District, NSW
