Nova Scotia and PEI Livingstones of Colonsay,Argyll

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

Hi All,
A while ago I reminded by one by Prince Edward Island Canada researcher with Mull Livingston ancestral roots in both Nova Scotia and PEI of 2 Livingston families that settled in Nova Scotia and the other in neighbouring Prince Edward Island in the early 1800's.

Here is info on two Livingston families who settled in Nova Scotia and PEI in Atlantic Canada of Colonsay, origin. Many of the other Livingstons who settled in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island province in Canada were of neighbouring Mull ancestry. This is info on two families one that settled in Nova Scotia and the other in neighbouring PEI with a Colonsay connection.

1. Donald Livingstone and Mary Graham a Colonsay, Argyll connection
We have been over the years researching many of the early Livingstons who settled in the early 19th century in Nova Scotia. A significant number of Livingston families settled in Nova Scotia at this time and many of their descendants still live today in Nova Scotia.
Donald Livingston and Mary Graham were married on Feb. 16, 1816 in Colonsay, Argyll according to the Colonsay Parish, records. There is no information as to whom Donald Livingtons parents were. Their first born Mary was baptized on March 5, 1817 in Colonsay and there are no further records for this family in Colonsay or in Argyllshire and the seem to vanish.

According to Murray a well informed descendant of Donald and Mary, they and their daughter proabably left Colonsay for Nova Scotia in then British North America from the port of Tobermory, Mull probably in the year 1819. He kindly shared this informatiom not so long ago with this Forum:

The following appeared in the October 16, 1819 edition of the Halifax Acadian Recorder newspaper. It is believed that many of those aboard this voyage of the ship Economy were from the Isle of Colonsay including Donald and Mary Livingston and their daughter Mary.

Testimonial: "THE PASSENGERS in the ship Economy of Aberdeen from Tobermorry to Pictou, desire in this public manner to express their gratitude to captain James Fraser, the master, for the kind treatment they received from him during the passage, which consisted of five weeks. Two hundred and eighty-five souls embarked at Tobermorry, and were landed in good health and spirits, together with four children born upon the passage. Pictou, October 4, 1819."

I have pieced together the following family, which is neither complete nor guaranteed accurate:
