Hi Donald and Kendrea

I think it has been about 2 years since we last were in contact. I found a record pertaining to the arrival of Donald Livingston and his wife Jeane Currie arriving in Canada from Scotland in 1924. See my posting on Donald David and Jeanne Livingston of Calgary Alberta 1924 posted June 2, 2015.

regards,

Donald

Hi Donald,

There is a Ben Vheir cottage on the shore of Loch Linnhe, near the south end of the golf course.

This appears to be the only house around the area with a name even vaguely similar to that in previous posts in the area of Lettermore.

I think you'll find it's on the A828 road, between South Ballachulish & Kentallen, it's used as a holiday cottage, now, they have a website with photos.

Hi John,
Thanks for pointing that out.
Must be in the Ben Vheir area as you say where these Livingstons last lived in Ballachulish, Argyll. Apparently somewhere along Ballachulish Rd according to the 1901 Census. I find that there are often an interesting variety of spellings in the records for settlements in 18th and 19th century Argyllshire and often it takes me a bit of searching to figure out what is the correct or most common gaelic spelling is used today or back then. No doubt this Livingston family when they lived at Ben Vheir would have been familiar with this old home and probably lived close by I would assume. I wonder what the history is of this home for rent and where these Livingstons lived Ben Vheir. Close by for sure I would think.
Looks like it is located in South Ballachulish. This site has some photos the cottage for rent and good map at the very bottom of the page. Looks like a nice place to stay. 80 miles from Glasgow. 15 miles from Fort William and close to the Isle of Lismore, Morvern and Mull. Scenic Balachulish looks like a nice easy trip for Livingston tourists to include with other locations of Livingstone significance in their Argyllshire travel itinery. We have some Clan Society and DNA project participants with Ballachulish area Livingston family connections who may have visited Ben Vheir when at Ballachulish. Would be interesting to look at the old detailed 18th century Argyllshire Ordnance Survey maps that include Southern and Northern Ballachulish and I would think Ben Vheir at the time this Livingston family was residing there.
1901 Census Glencoe and Ballachulish, Lismore and Appin Civil Parish
Benview (Ben Vheir) House Ballachulish Rd.
Donald Livingston joiner age 44 born Morvern (Parish)
Annie Livingston age 44 born Glasgow
Donald Livingston age 14 b. Ballachulish
Lachlan Livingston age 11 b. Ballachulish
Bessie Livingston age 10 b. Ballachulish
Catharine Livingston age 5 b. Ballachulish
John Livingston age 2 b. Ballachulish

Hi John,

https://www.addressesandpostcodes.co.uk ... 9-4jd.html
with google map virtual reality map of Ben Vheir and surrounding buildings in the Lettermore/Ballachulish area along the highway. I have not been able to see the Ben Vheir cottage of the adjacent grey stone house by the beach using this. I am thinking that the main grey stone two storey plus attic manor house from the 19th century may have the main house at Ben Vheir or Beb Vheir House owned at one time by the principal farmer or landowner in the area in the 19th century.

A detailed 1832 Thompson map of Argyll that includes some buildings marked in the Kentallin and Lettermore area.

Hi John,
Yes I also think this seems to be the most likely place where Donald Duncan Livingston's great-grandfather and family were living by the late 1800's after they left, Keil, Morvern. And as Donald Duncan's great grandfather died as late as 1933 at Ben Vheir it is entirely possible that he may have lived in that stone cottage I am thinking. One of Donald Duncan's who visited the area apparently several years ago may now if that cottage for rent is where the family lived prior to the 1930's. I wonder if any old family photos of the home they lived in survive today to help verify precisely where at Ben Vheir they were situated. I think though the fact their records indicate that they lived at Ben Vheir house certainly helps to narrow the location down quite a bit. Many Livingstons with Scottish ancestry are not so lucky and don't really know precisely where their family originally lived in Western Argyllshire regrettably. Do Donald Duncan and Kendra are lucky that way.

Ok the advertisement below has photos of the main large grey main two storey house in the distance from the Ben Vheir Cottage. But it taken from the back of the house rather than from the Road. I assume the main house in the picture may be Ben Vheir House and the adjacent cottage is for rent. The cottage is across the Road near the beach. The main house a two story plus attic 19th century grey stone home is included the photo on this website and stated as also being adjacent to the Beach and not apparently the large similar grey stone building I saw nearby. This one at Ben Vhair is too close to the beach apparently to be easily seen by the virtual reality photos of dwellings along the highway. I assume that this large manor was Ben Vhair House of the 19th century unless it the other grey stone 2 storey building quite similar I saw on close by on the opposite side of the road?

Hi Donald,

I checked the post code for Ben Vheir house and cottage, result was same code for both properties.

I've passed through this area many times, I'm almost certain the two storey building is Ben Vheir House.

Over the weekend, I'll e-mail them, see if they can supply any info on previous occupiers,

John

Hi John,

That sounds like a great idea. Donald's great-grandfather Donald Livingston 1856-1933 and his wife Ann who died in 1937 were possibly the last in that family to live on the Ben Vheir property at Ben Vheir House. I could be wrong but I assume as Donald was a retired Joiner that he was living as a tenant in a cottage or croft situated adjacent to the 2 story Ben Vheir House. The current residents may not have info on any tenants at Ben Vheir before the last War such as Donald Livingston, but they may know of an older family in the area who remembers the Livingstons or where they resided at Ben Vheir. Which ever dwelling it was, if they were living in it as recent as the 1930's chances are reasonably good the old Livingston dwelling may still exist where we are looking. I will try and see if I can get into contact with Donald David as he may be able to shed more light as he was working on his family history some years back and may have more information on this subject. It would be pretty interesting to actually locate an old Livingston home in the Lettermore/Ballachuish vicinity. Not very often we can locate an actually cottage or croft where 19th century Argyll livngston tenants lived.

regards,

Donald
