Hi Roberta,

Some Mclays spelt their name McClay in Donegal, Ireland.These were apparently McLays originally from Scotland. Working with those involved in the DNA project who have done some research on McClays and Mclays plus my own research the conclusion is I think that many of the McClays and McLays are likely the same people.

regards..

Thanks, Roberta!

Pretty sure this Duncan is a relative. It's a common name in my family and I believe I may have this record somewhere. I believe his would be a nephew of my immigrant ancestor, or perhaps of that same line but further down.

Thanks--and for the others as well. No doubt these will become useful to someone else researching these lines as well!

This family is always interesting. There's a San Francisco area McLea family that still own a chain of Tire Stores out that way. I keep wondering how they are related but have never made contact successfully.

Also interesting to me because the childrens names include 4/7 that were used in the same generation of my family.

Anyway, thanks! I also wonder if the son of Elizabeth Sharp McLea could be related. I need to check my records.

Hi Kyle;

The oldest form of the name Maconlea: in a note contributed to Highland Papers vol. 1i p. 258, the Duke of Argyle wrote:- "The Maconleas were originally M'Dunleas. The D disappears through euphonistic elusion in Gaelic and there is little doubt that their eponymic ancestor was Dunsleve, the son of Aedh Alain, who through his son Suibhne or Swene was also ancestor of the Mac Suibhnes or M'Ewens, the ancient lords of Otter In Cowal and Argyll and of Castle Sween in Knapdale.
