Take a look at this picture, is this WR1003 (Livingston Modern tartan)?

Wow, that sure looks like it. I'll send Matt an email and confirm.

Email sent. I will let everyone know when he replies.

And here is the reply I received:
Greg,

Yes, that is indeed the Livingston tartan. It does not show in the picasa photo you linked to, but above the loom there was taped a paper which identified the tartan as the Livingston tartan, with the thread count given for the weaver. Good eye!

By the way, if you look through Matt Newsome's other pictures, there is some more of this tartan along with a whole bunch of other pictures of his recent trip to Scotland that may be of some interest. Matt is a Tartan scholar and knows a LOT about the history of Tartan. I have thought of trying to enlist his aid in tracking down the history of our Livingston tartan at some point.

HI Kyle and Greg,

I thought that looked like a classic Livingstone tartan weave but I wasnt 100 percent certain. There are a few out there that look somewhat like our tartan. Thats great. We should see if we could get permission to include that photo in our clan web site gallery. I think the Baron will also be interested in seeing it. Nice find Kyle. I talked to someone a few years from the Scottish tartan Authority I think it was in North Carolina by phone or e-mail regarding my unrelenting quest to find the ultimate origins of the Livingston tartan prior to the 2oth century. For some reason I seem to remember talking to chap named Brian but I could be wrong.

regards,

Donald

Good idea, Donald. I will talk with Matt and see if he would consider that. I've done a little business with him in the past and will, when I have the $$, have him make me a box pleated kilt in the Livingstone Ancient tartan.

I have been peering at this photo, and think that it is Livingston Ancient rather than Livingston Modern. The colours in the tartan on the loom look a bit muted, and the wool on the shuttle does look slightly orangey, but it may be just the way the photo is printed. I don't think that Matt tells us whether this is the Modern or the Ancient.

Regards,

Jill

Good point. The colour wasn't clear to me, but the sett jumped right out! :)

Thanks for showing us the enlarged picture, Greg. I am 99.9% certain that it is the Ancient Livingstone tartan. Until someone tells me otherwise, of course!
