Kaye! Thanks for getting in touch, I was worried since we hadn't heard from you and wasn't sure how close you might have been. Despite all the devastation we are glad that our NZ clansmen are okay. We wish some of those 'miracles' were still happening, but are glad to hear regardless of the trademark NZ resilience and the international help you are receiving. Please continue to keep us posted--our thoughts are with you all!

When the going gets tough, the tough do not hesitate to help.

Its amazing to see the community spirit emerging to help those in need. While rescuers still work on finding survivers, a new bunch of heros have emerged.

Teams of ordinary people are targeting streets in urban suburbs to help bring back a little normality into peoples lives.

The student army was arranged on facebook at the University of Canterbury (in christchurch) and each day between 700 and 1000 students have headed out into low risk areas to dig up the tons of silt caused by liquifaction, that blocks streets, driveways and residential backyards allowing residents to drive to get food and supplies. This army has moved tons of silt with shovels, and wheelbarrows for people that they dont even know! These people are our leaders of tomorrow!

The Federated Farmers has mobilised farmers and their machinery to assist clean up silt from Christchurch city. Nicknamed the "farmy army" these farmers and their machines moved 1,100 tons of silt in their first day. Go the farmers!

And driving home tonight I heard on the radio a gentleman talking about the water contractors working at the end of his property. Four men trying to get water supplies back into this mans street, now that wasnt unusual, but what was is that the four men live in the north island, 2 in Wellington and 2 in Tauranga, and they have stopped work to head to Christchurch to assist using their skills. They dont even live in the South Island where Christchurch is located.

I could type for hours telling stories like this, but Im sure you get my point. this country will bounce back from this tragedy.

This tragedy is not a city's tragedy, it is a country's tragedy. It has affected the whole country and many around the world. Words like kindness, compassion and helpfulness, do not fully do justice to the incredible work being done by so many to help those to recover from this disaster.

It will take years to rebuild this city, and we can never replace those tragically lost in this earthquake. But the spirit shown by so many over the past week is a wonderful reminder why so many of us are proud to live in this wonderful country.

yep it was bag and many buildings will noy be fixed. They are bulldozing many unsafe buildings already.

But all this pails compared to the tragedy and massive loss of life in Japan from the earthquake and Tsunami

Hi Bryan,

That ok. We understood what you meant to say. It definitely seems to be the season for earthquakes and natural disasters. Very tramatic time for alot of people.

Yes, the Japan devastation is beyond belief as well. Indeed, not a good year for natural disasters.
