Clan Heritage: Clan Armigers

Post by Grant South1 »

Dear Kinsfolk, Of interest are those Clansfolk who are armigerous, establishing for their family and descendants, an armorial family heritage. THE ARMORIAL GRANT. For those who can prove Scottish descent and/or those who live in a Commonwealth country which does not have a direct heraldic authority. The well excercised avenue is to petition the Lord Lyon, Scotland's King of Arms in Edinburgh. The Lord Lyon in the excercise of the royal prerogative may grant arms to those of Scots heritage. The effect of such a grant is that the grantee and their heraldic heir's are established as members of Scotland's Armorial Noblese. For those interested in their genealogy/family history, without great expence, this is the way to establish recognised Scots heritage for both you and your descendants. All the best!

I've definitely always been interested in this and thought of doing this at some point.

Dear Kyle, In terms of proof, my understanding is that Lyon will accept census schedules as evidence. This is certainly the case where parish records are not found.

Kyle Your arms will be of great interest. Our Chief, has a wonderful example of traditional- 'West Highland Heraldry'. As a MacLea I believe you will be granted a suitably differenced shield accordingly. The totemic symbols found in Highland heraldry are of deep cultural meaning. This is an interesting study in itself as it directly conveys our deep ancestry. My own arms also reflect this older totemic tradition. Lyon Court is very approachable, and ever helpful in assisting those who desire arms. All the best!

Dear Grant, Do you have your arms available for others to look at?
