Original Parish Records

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

I sent away a month ago for microfilm copies of original Parish records from about 10 or 11 parishes near Inverary and have now received most of them. There may not be much point going through these as I don't think I will find what I was lookin for. But there may be one or two that have something which may be of use to the theory I have been working on regarding the two Maclea groups. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Hello Donald, That is excellent. Good Luck on that. I have completed compiling the birth portion of the "database" would you like a copy to compare with the parish records you now have and possibly assist in your theory? If so please email me at v_1dlivi -at- hotmail -dot- com. David

HI David, Happy Earth day. (April 22,2007) Help save Australia from Global Warming. I will get back to you on your question. I just got the call from the library regarding the parish records so I have to check and see which parishes are on which reels. One of them hopefully is Inverary parish. The other Parishes were ones which would be of more interest to Kyle's McLeas probably to Maconlea Livingstones but at the time over a month ago when I ordered them you didnt have your Livingstone database up and running. I will be going through these reels so I will let you know what parishes I have received and if there is anything of interest to you or Kyle or something you want verified please let me know. regards Donald

Original Parish Records

Hi David, I believe that the locations discussed by Niall earlier on the main site our the extent of our ancient territory. As the original clan members grew, the Baron's Maconleas spread into the neighbouring Movern and Mull. Regretably among the Parishes closestto the Isle of Lismore there is not alot of baptismal and marriage records prior to 1770's. ON the other hand parishes beyond the commonly understood principal area of our Maconlea Livingstones as we move closer to the Linsaig MacLeas there are some very old baptismal and birth records. Have to try and make best use of the records we have which are those closer to the Linsaig McLeas and perhaps see what we can deduce in anything useful from these regarding the width and bredth of the territory of the Linsaig McLeas. So what can these parish records relatively close to the Linsaig McLeas tell me about the McLeas in the rhelm further from our traditonal area. What happened to the Inverary Parish McLeas after 1745? I was out enjoying the summertime weather today and attending our used book fair. Usually there are over 50 book dealers; but one has to get there early before the treasures kept get grabbed first. Picked up another great book on Dr. David Livingstone that is largely from a 1990's exibit of Dr. Livingstone momentos and rare family photographs. Quite interesting. Its late. When I get a chance tommorrow I will e-mail you. regards Donald

Dear Donald, Definitely interested in anything you can find, but right now with job-seeking, job-doing, and the end of my teaching semester, I can't wrap my brain around the right questions to ask! Even so, I'll read with interest any discoveries and provide input when I can! All best, Kyle=

Hi Donald, You pose an interesting question: What happened to the Inveraray Parish McLeas after 1745. Here's what we know: 1) By 1720, John McLea was heir to Lindsaig and also a merchant in Inveraray. John was married to Katharine Campbell who was related to the Campbells of Stonefield (An area close to Lismore in Lorne that at one time was owned by McLeas). 2) John McLea was made a burgess of Inveraray in 1718. 3)

Hi Craig, I wonder how many McLeas lived in Inverary Parish in the 1700's. I really have no idea how large a group they were, but in looking at the McLea records that Kyle and David were unearthing, I found it interesting that McLeas seemed to disappear after 1745. Hopefully we can verify this as it is a mystery, particulary as you mentioned the Inverary Parish being the home of the Lindsaig McLeas. regards Donald

David, Went to library today. Received original parish records on microfilm: Jura, Kilmodan,Kilmartin,Inverary,Inverchaolain, Dunoon, Kilbrandon, Kilchattan, Kilchenan and Kilfinan Parishes. I assume there are no McLeas listed in Inverary Parish records after 1745 as previously stated, but I can check the original parish records if you think it is neccessary. regards Donald
