Re: Nova Scotia/PEI Livingstone Research
Apparently some Livingstons have just assumed that the pioneer Cape Breton Livingstons are related and that assumption has persisted over the years, while others suspect they may be related, but are not sure. And there are probably some who have made up their mind that there is no connection between the pioneer Livingston families in Cape Breton. I am not sure which group I belong. What exactly is the truth of the matter? I dont think anyone knows for certain. I have tried to discover to them as others have. I think one could speculate forever on these things. I think however the 18th century German Philospher Goethe said it best:
"The greatest happiness of the thinking man is to have fathomed what can be fathomed and quietly to reverence what is unfathomable."

Hi Everyone
I have mentioned in the past that Colin's daughter Katherine was living in US in 1896, or thereabouts. Colin's wife's name was Catharine. I have found the following death certificate from Massachusetts and would like some comments on whether it is what I hope it is. If it isn't what I hope it is......looks like there may have been another Colin living in Cape Breton.

Hi All
When I do a search on the Nova Scotia Births, deaths and marriages database, a few Gilleo's show up, but when I look at the documents they are Gillis'. Is Gilleo another form of Gillis? Kinda like Livingston and Levingston? Sometimes the S may look like an O if it is written.

Hello Barry,
I checked the U.S census and found this Kate Worcester in the 1880 census with husband Theodore, it says Kate was born P.E.I. she is 24 years of age. parents born Scotland, has one child, Alice3 mo. old . They are in Middlesex, Mass
In the 1900 she is in Worcestor,Mass. with husband Theodore and children Marshal,18, Leonard,16, Rebecca,12, George,10 and Jennie 7. It states Kate immigrated in 1873.
In 1910 she is a widow, boarder in Worcestor,Mass. Living with a family name of Fairbanks. this census taken May,1910 before she died.

Hi Jewel
That's interesting the census says she was born on PEI and her death certificate says she was born in Cape Breton. That error would fit with the family history and would be an easy error to make. Middlesex is an area of Massachusetts where many Livingstons from Cape Breton and PEI moved to. It has been an area of interest for me in the past. I talked to my mother today and she said their family is related to the Gillis family, but she is not sure how. They were always told this in her family. I will see if I can find someone else that can confirm that. My mother is one of the youngest in her family.
I think this is my Colin's daughter. That is why the reference to PEI and the connection to Cape Breton as well.

Hi Barry and Jewel,
I thought perhaps for a minute you had found John Livingston Junior and Old Kate's eldest daughter from Mull River,Cape Breton Catharine Livingston born abt. 1846 or 1847 She went to Dorchester, Mass but she married a guy named Henry Monck according to Dr. St. Clair. Perhaps you see her in the Mass. census records somewhere. Also her older sister Mary b. abt. 1844 lived in Boston, Mass. Dont know the name or her husband or if she married. Mary died about 1921 in Boston I think.
ALexander of Whycocomagh had a daughter Catharine but she was born abt. 1844 and she did not go anywhere that I can see.
So the Catharine you found may be a daughter of your Colin. I dont know.
regards,
Donald

Re: Nova Scotia/PEI Livingstone Research
Hi Barry,
That is a record for a Catharine Livingston b.1850 died 1910. I dont remember when your Colin's daughter was born . Sorry. I wonder whether she is from a Cape Breton or PEI family. Somewhat confusing.
I will check all the Catharines born around that time at Mull River and Whycocomagh that I know of but it could be Colins daughter given there is apparent mention of both PEI and Cape Breton. That would make sense. Does 1850 possibly fit for her birth given the birthdates of her brothers john and Angus? With my computer I cant see the whole document on the page, does it mention the name of her parents as Colin and Catharine?
regards,
Donald

Hi Donald
If you scroll to the right with your bottom scroll bar you should see a vertical scroll bar to scroll up and down.
I says father is Colin Livingston born in Scotland and mother Kate Gilleo born in Scotland, and daughter Catherine is born in Cape Breton. The Gilleos in the NS Vital Statistic search page are actually Gillis' which is odd. The census document Jewel found says Catherine is born in PEI.
Estimated birthdates from census are...
John - 1851
John - 1848
Angus - 1856
Mary - 1859
And Mass. Catherine - 1850
