Hugh Douglas Livingstone

Can anyone help me with information of Lieut. H.D. Livingstone who died in WW1 serving with the 2nd Batt., Canadian Inf. (Eastern Ontario Regt.) ?

He is listed on our village War Memorial (Lustleigh, Devon, England) and I am researching him in order to honour him with a published biography on the 100th anniversary of the day he fell in France.

Any family or personal information is welcome; also any details about the 2nd Batt., Canadian Inf. (Eastern Ontario Regt.) would be helpful.

Also, I have no experience of researching Canadian records, so any help in that direction would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your posting, John, but I already have the CWGC information. I also have details from other public websites including baptismal records, census information etc. I was really hoping to go beyond the "low-hanging fruit" and pick up more details about his family - maybe connect with a living descendant for example.

The link above is his service record, only had a quick glance at it, only thing out of the ordinary I noticed, he originally signed on as a sapper, & worked his way up through the ranks.

Looks like they were scraping the bottom of the barrel, sending a soldier who had worked as regiment clerk to the front.

Probably this was not too out of the ordinary, given the high rate of fatalities at the time.

CWGC give his home address as Chiswick, his military records appear to vary from Putney to Birkenhead.

No indication why he signed on in Canada.

I have copies of his birth & wedding certificates, not had time to check census returns as yet, will have another look at Scotlands People tomorrow.

I am so very grateful for the link to his service record, John. This is absolutely brilliant and will help me piece together some more about his military service. May I ask, is this a resource available on a Canadian website?

I have absolutely no idea why he signed up in Toronto rather than joining the British Army. I had thought that he had emigrated, as the passenger list records his intention to settle in Canada. However, I found has only his name and I was wondering why I couldn't find his wife's name. It seems unlikely that he was running away as he was sending his money back to her. He did have children - two at the time he died and a third who was born afterwards.

Regarding locations, he married his wife in London (I have a copy of his marriage register entry) and it would seem she lived their for some time, but later moved to Devon: one address is given as Paignton, which is probably where she was living when he died as that is also where his third child was born. I don't have a birth certificate for Hugh Douglas - are you able to share that with me please?

I need to look around Scotlands People as well, as I'd like to see where the family was living before moving to Devon, find out about his father's (Alexander) occupation there (he came to Devon to be a mining engineer) and I'd also be interested in seeing his marriage record, particularly to learn more about Hugh Douglas' mother. I'm hoping to have success at Scotlands People, but I've not used the site before, so if you find anything of note, please let me know.

Hughs birth cert. & parents marriage cert. above, I'll get the Canadian site address for you, I've got a note of it somewhere, unfortunately, I tidied up this morning, & can find nothing.

I think I saw somewhere on his records, he only returned to duty from two weeks UK leave, when he was killed,

I see that I would need to buy credits to access these records. Do you know anyone who is a member of this site? I'm working on a community project as a volunteer and the project doesn't provide funds for research, so it would be useful if I could find a way to access this information for free.

I've been through all known Scotlands People records for Hughs family, the furthest back I can find, is his parents & g/parents, the only information available, appears to be on these two certificates.

I also spent time on Family Search, this is a free site, I could find no info on Hugh on that site either, still looking.

As far as free access to SP, there is no chance,
