The second pioneer Livingston family of Grey County that originated from a different part of Mull, Argyllshire is that of Hugh Livingston b. abt. 1806 and his wife (Agnes Mcgregor in census info) also referred in some genealogy info as Ann McGregor. From the Torosay, Mull parish records we know that Hugh and his family lived in the 1830's at Kilpatrick in Torosay Parish, Mull, Argyllshire before settling in Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada in the 1840's. Some of Hugh's children were born at Kilpatrick,Torosay and others in Canada. It appears that all the Livingstons who were tenants had left Kilpatrick by the 1840's with Hugh and his family being the last of the Livingston tenants at Kilpatrick. From his croft at Kilpatrick where he was a tenant, Hugh would have been able to see in the distance the beautiful scenic view of Duart Castle the ancestral home of the Clan Maclean Chiefs. There is unfortunately no birth or baptism record for a Hugh Livingston born between 1800 and 1810 in Kilpatrick or elsewhere in Torosay Parish , Argyll however we do know that Ronald Livingston Sr. was recorded as a resident with his wife Ann Buchanan and his children between 1799 and 1802 at Kilpatrick and this would have almost certainly have been some relative of Hugh's given that Hugh named a son Ronald and Hugh also apparently resided at the village of Kilpatrick in the early 1800's and was residing in Kilpatrick in Torosay Parish, wife his Ann also known as Agnes McGregor when the 1841 census was conducted before later in the 1840's settling in Sydenham Township, Grey County Ontario. The problem with Ronald Livingston Sr. being Hugh Livingston's father was that according to the 1802 birth record of his son Ronald Livingston Jr. born in Kilpatrick Torosay it is recorded in his 1802 birth record that his son Ronald Livingston Jr. is the son of Ann Buchanan and the "late" Ronald Livingston Sr. So I am thinking that because Hugh Is not recorded in the Torosay birth records and because Ronald Livingston Sr. died around 1802 in Kilpatrick, Torosay that it is unlikely that he was the father of Hugh Livingston b. abt. 1805 in Torosay, Mull. It does however seem quite certain that Hugh Livingston who interestingly enough named his eldest son Ronald in the 1830's in Kilpatrick must be somehow related to Ronald Livingston Sr. possibly a nephew. Unfortunately as mentioned I can find not birth records for Hugh Livingston b. abt. 1805 of Torosay, Mull Argyll or in any other parish in Mull around that time.

Hugh's in-laws Peter McGregor Sr. and Janet Lamont also settled in Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario arriving about 1842.

Hugh Livingston abt. 1806 in Torosay, Mull probably at Kilpatrick died Feb. 19,1859 Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario Buried Annan Cemetery, Annan, Sydenham Township, Grey County Ontario, Canada
married Anne McGregor of Ardchoirk, Torosay, Mull on February 18,1831 in Kilpatrick,Torosay,Mull, Argyllshire died February 15,1882 Sydenham Township,Grey County,Ont.
Buried Annan Cemetery, Annan, Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario
I presume that Hugh, Ann and family lived not far present day town of Owen Sound, Ontario.

They are recorded in 1852 Census for Sydenham Township, Grey County, Ontario which indicates that arrived in Ontario in 1840's. Hugh's wife is listed Agnes age 36 Hugh is 45 Children recorded Mary age 15 b. Scotland, Ronald age 13 b.scotland, Campbell age 11 b. Scotland, Ann age 9 born Canada, Peter age 6 b. Canada, John age 4 b.Canada, Janet age 1 b. Canada

They are earlier recorded in the 1841 Scottish Census where Hugh Livingston, his wife Agnes and family are located in the village of Kilpatrick, Parish of Torosay, Argyll.
Hugh age 35
Agnes age 30 (wife recorded as Ann MacGregor in earlier before 1841 recorded parish records)
Margaret (should be mary) age 5
Ronald age 3
Campbell age 2
Euphemia Mcgregor age 32

In the Parish Records Hugh Livingston or Livingstone's wife is referred to as Ann MacGregor rather than Agnes McGregor as she is in the 1841 Scottish Census and the 1852 Canadian Census. However in a July 17, 1891 Grey County marriage record Jessie Malvina Livingstone is recorded as the daughter of Hugh Livingstone and Ann McGregor. So she apparently uses two names.

Hugh Livingston of Kilpatrick, Torosay Parish, Mull was married Feb.8th 1831 in Torosay Parish, Mull to Anne MacGregor of Ardachoirk,Torosay,Mull

Children recorded in Torosay Parish Records all born and baptised in Kilpatrick,Torosay Parish, Mull,Argyllshire
Anne Livingston born November 15th 1831 baptised November 23th 1831
Mary Livingston born April 2nd 1833 baptised April 7th 1833
Ronald Livingston born October 7th 1837 baptised October 15th 1837
Campbell Livingstone born May 21st 1840 baptised June 18th 1840

The curious thing of course is that in the parish records from the period of 1831 to 1840 Hugh Livingstons wife is referred to as Anne Macgregor and there are Macgregors living next to them in both Kilpatrick, Torosay, Mull and in Sydenham township, Grey County, Ontario. In the 1841 Scottish Census and subsequent 1851 Census when Hugh is living in Canada his wife is referred to as "Agnes". It appears however to be the same person and I noticed in a later record from Sydenham Township that Hugh's wife is referred to as Ann maiden Mcgregor so perhaps it is the same person. Somewhat confusing.

Donald

Regarding Hugh Livingston b. abt. 1806 in Kilpatrick, Torosay, Mull, who settled in Grey County, Ontario in the 1840's I think I may be able to fill in some of missing pieces of his life earlier in Torosay, Mull, Argyllshire. It appears that in the year 1799 according to a surviving Torosay Parish record that there was one Livingston a Ronald Livingston Sr. tenant residing in a croft at Kilpatrick and from subsequent parish records a few years later it is revealed that his wife was Ann Buchanon. While Hugh Livingston's birth and baptismal records are missing there appears to be two baptismal records surviving for his older brother Ronald Livingston Jr.of Kilpatrick baptised March 23, 1802 and sister Mary baptised May 19, 1800. By the 1841 Scottish Census, only Hugh Livingston his wife Agnes (Ann) Macgregor and their children are residing as tenants at Kilpatrick Torosay. Hugh's presumed parents Ronald Livingston Sr.and Ann Buchanon have disappeared from Kilpatrick and presumed older brother Ronald Livingston Jr. born abt. 1802 and his wife Catharine MacInnes and his family apparently left Torosay sometime between 1826 and 1836 settlling in Rothesay, Bute where Ronald Jr. found work as a Tailor. As this was apparently the only Livingston family residing between 1799 and 1841 at Kilpatrick, I think we can be reasonbly certain that Ronald Livingston Sr. and his wife Ann Buchannon were his parents. Also note that Hugh and his wife named their eldest children Ann,Mary and Ronald. It is reasonably certain this is the correct family.

Donald
