I have just joined this blog. I am researching James Livingston b.1755 MD?, m. Sarah ? b. ca. 1760 MD?. Sarah appears as a widow with 1 B , 2 G between 16-25 in the 1810 Fed Census for Woodford County, KY. This couple had Stephen, Elizabeth, Ellen Virginia and probably others that were older. Ellen Virginia m. Price Edrington and appears in the 1820 census in Woodford County, KY. She appears in 1840 in Hickman County, KY. 1850/1860 census Ellen Virginia Livingston Edrington records her birth state as MD. There appears a James Livingston in 1800 census in Jessamine County, KY, but if Ellen was b in MD 1795, this must not be the correct person. There was a James Livingston in Boquetenorton Hunded, MD m. Sarah Cathell in 1790 MD census. In fact, there are only 4 Livingstons in 1790 MD (James, Andrew, Todd and George). Ellen Virginia's niece (daughter of Stephen), Martha Ann was rather famous in her town of Kansas City, MO. She reported that she descended from the famous "Peter Livingston" of Constitution fame. Is anyone more familiar than I with this group of Livingstons? I thank you for your help and am happy to share any data that I have gathered. Ellen Virginia's daughter m. Nicholas Meriwether Kerr, a first cousin once removed of Meriwether Lewis. Obviously this family was of some note.
Warmly,
Bradley Gibson (bradleygibson1608@msn.com)

Oops! I meant to say that the James Livingston of Boquetenorton, MD appears in 1800 census with correct ages of children to fit Sarah (widowed wife) and her census record of Woodford County, KY in 1810. The James Livingston of JESSAMINE County, KY cannot be the man I seek. It appears that James Livingston of MD removed to Woodford County, KY AFTER 1800 and there died before 1810. So, does anyone have any information on THIS James Livingston m. Sarah ? from Boquetenorton, Worcester, MD? There appears a Benjamin, James and John Livingston in this area in 1800 and a George, James, Todd and Benjamin in 1790 in same area. Where did these folks come from?
James Livingston b 1755 MD / d bf 1810 KY

Hi Bradley,
Welcome to the Maclea Livingstone Society Forum. Dont really know where he came from prior to 1800 U.S. Census but you can assume your Maryland Livingstons from that point in time were either:
1. Connected to Robert Livingston of lowland Livingston family origin and landlord of the old Livingston Manor, Dutchess County, New York State Family. His descendants were involved in New York State Government and one signed the constitution. Robert Livingston settled in the late 1600's in what was then the colony of New York and became a substantial land owner and land lord.
2. A German family that adopted the name Livingston originally residing in New York or neighbouring Pennsylvania.
3. Highland Livingstons that settled in North Carolina and Georgia in the 1700's from Western Argyllshire,Scotland.
What we have to do is to try to figure out which of these scenarios best fits with your Livingston ancestor.
regards
Donald

John Livingston b 1613 Dunipace, Stirlingshire, Scotland d 1676 King Queen, Virginia, USA. m. Annabella Sewell. This is a Ggrandfather / mother on Ancestry.com. I am only attempting to authenticate this data. Does this jibe with your research?
BTW, a granddaughter to James Livingston was a famous Kansas City woman ca 1860-1880 and she wrote a piece re. her connection to a Peter Livingston of Constitution fame. This connection is difficult for me to make as he was in NY and her family was in early VA then MD.
I can also write that the Livingstons of MD were involved in a mercantile enterprise that involved shipping to Caribbean Islands and Easterncoast US. One captain was named Muscoe Livingston and supposedly he was named in a will of a Sir Livingston of Sclotand. That is all I know.

Hi Bradley,
Yes I had forgotten about the lowland Livingston family of John Livingston of King and QUeen County Virginia and the early settlement of Virginia in the 1600's. Some of them lived at Poropotank Creek and think were referred to a Poropotank Livingstons. That should have been no. 4 on my list of possibility for Southern U.S. Livingston origins. I will see if any of our U.S. Livingston experts can be any help to you in your quest for info on the King County Virginia Livingstons. I was in touch a while ago now, with an expert on Poropotank Creek, Livingstons descended from a John Livingston who settled in Virginia in the 1600's and thought but not proven to be Sir John Livingston of the lowland Dunipace Livingstons. I am not sure that we can connect you with anyone that authenticate without doubt a family connection to Sir John due to the limitations of the existing information. I will attempt to make contact with those researching this Virginia Livingston family connection that you are trying to find proof of a connection to Sir John.

Donald

Hi Bradley,
Have you located James and Sarah's children in particular your ancestor living in 1850 in an 1850 U.S Census? I could really use that information if can tell me the name of your Livingston ancestor and his location in the year 1850.It may be helpful as it is a census that records the state birthplace of each person censused. It is an easy way to verify with a certain accuracy where they were born and also importantly where James and Sarah and family were at the time of the birth of their children. So if you a pretty clear as which child of James and Sarah you are descended from locate them in the 1850 Census and see what state they indicated in the census they were born in. There is also a later census which lists the parents of censused person's place of birth in the U.S Census. I think that was the 1880 or 1870 U.S. Census. Been a while since I did U.S research as my area of expertise is Scottish and Canadian Livingstone research.
I think you have already established that your Livingstones are in the Kentucky census and have a Maryland connection but the 1850 Census check of James children would beyond doubt verify where they born and living in the early 1800's and possibly before that. Once having established certainty as to where James and Sarah were living when their children were born you really need to talk to someone in Kentucky, Maryland etc that can help you locate any family records pertaining to James and Sarah Livingston in Kentucky or Maryland. Dont know how easy that will be finding those records but there are no doubt people there who have better access to those local records than us.
We have to familiarize ourselves with the basic details of what you know and are searchiing for. If understand correctly you have located your probable ancestor James Livingston and family in Boquetenorton Worcester,Maryland in the 1800 U.S Census and that he died before 1810 and his widow Sarah and family then appear in Woodford, Kentucky in the 1810 Census. What I really need to know is what you know "for certain" regarding James and Sarah's decendants or more to the point I need to know what is proven withdoubt of your ancestral line in the U.SA. Go backward in time if you could begining with your grandfather great grandfather, great-great grandfather as far back as you go to James and Sarah and simply show the ancestral line generation by generation to James and Sarah. This will make it simpler for us to see how your ancestors connect to this James and Sarah. We kinda sort it out in our own heads what you know in order to make any further progress.
I am hoping we can locate your Livingston ancestor generation by generation beginnning in the 1900 U.S. census and work our way backsward in the U.S census records. If you already have this info please pass it on to us. Dont need complete family info in the census just trying to trace in my own mind your great grandfather, great-great grandfatehr and so on in the Census records and in your memory if you have this information.
I cant get a grasp of the possible Virginia John Livingston connection and until go through this ancestral line process. I hope you dont mind. I am trying to figure this thing out generation by generation and with the help of the census records.
Are you remotely related to a Livingston family? I am not clear on which child of widow Sarah Livingston of Kentucky in the 1840 U.S.Census you are descended from? Can you tell me without doubt which child of Sarah Livingston is your ancestor? The 1850 Census is more detailed in terms of family info. Have you checked the 1850 Census. Is Sarah Livingston and your ancestor in the 1850 census?
regards,
Donald

Hi Bradley,
Sorry but I did not receive a reply back from the Virginia Livingston expert. I did notice one Maryland Livingston in the 1850 Census who was born iN Virginia so indeed it is possible that if your Kentucky Livingston family were of Maryland ancestral origin that they could have been connected to the old Virginia Livingston family mentioned earlier. I will see if there is anyone else who can help you on this.
