McLea immigrants to Canada (and US via Canada) in 1870s, 80s
Hi Kyle, Was watching PBS this week and noticed there is an Australian photojournalist named Geoffrey Mackley I think it was. Is that one of our MacLea spelling variations? I wonder what the origins are that this Australian "Mackley family? regards Donald

Hi Donald, I have long felt that Mackley could very well be related, but have never yet found a family I could say was definitely related.

Hi Kyle, THere are numerous "Mackleas" in Australia by the look of it. Perhaps eventually we can establish their place of origin in Scotland and settlement dates. I would assume the simple answer may be that they are MacLeas whose ancestor preferred that spelling prior to their arrival in Australia. I noticed of course a few with this spelling in Scotland, but until recently had not paid all that much attention to MacLea spelling variations. regards Donald

Hopefully, some of them will find their way here, perhaps due to our listing of the alternative names on the Forum, and put some of their research or evidence out there and we can see if they relate. Or maybe they'll decide to join the DNA project! Either way -- making some links to these families, eventually, may prove very fruitful! Welcome Mackleys and Mackleas!
