I am descended from a John Livingstone (weaver) m. Agnes Edmiston, father of Gavin Livingstone b.1835: marriage date, & other siblings not known as yet. We are from Argyll. Your ancestor Hugh might be an older sibling?

Have you checked out the 1841 Kilbrandon/Kilchatton Parish Census. I noticed that one person have copied it out on a site. I am not sure, but I think it is complete. She states there were 2543 people listed. In any event it lists one Hugh Livingstone age 7 with Neil Livington 55 and Mary Livington age 40. I think they are living with a John Livingston age 45 of Black Mill Bay whereever that is. This was the only Hugh that fits your Hugh born about 1833. Are you certain of the birth date and Parish location?

From what I can gather this Black Mill Bay is located in Kilchatton Parish, so I guess there is some chance that this might be the Hugh Livingston born about 1833 in Kilchatton Parish your looking for with his kin.

Assuming that this is your ancestor Hugh Livingston, there is a Hugh Livingston age 37 Ploughman, wife Catharine age 36 and children John age 7 Mary age 5 and Anne age 2 at Toberonochy a little east of Kilchattan and near Black Mill Bay. You mentioned that your Hugh Livingston born abt. 1833 was married to a Catharine Mcdiarmid. The name Mcdermid appears at Toberonochy in the 1860's and 1870's. In the 1861 Census for Kilbrandon and Kilchattan, there is a Hugh Livingston age 26 also a ploughman single who was born at Kilchattan and living at Torsa which I think might be the Island of Torsa. He is a servant and dwelling on the farm of William Anderson age 67 a farmer with 180 acres. In the 1851 Census for the same parishes there is a Hugh Livingston age 16 living with JAmes Livingston age 32 and Jean Livingston age 39 at Torsa. In the 1841 Census we have a Hugh Livingston age 7 at the above mentioned Black Mill Bay in Kilchattan Parish living with John Livingston age 45 cottar, Neil Livingston age 55 and Mary Livingston age 40. I wonder if John and Mary could be his parents as Hugh's eldest children were named John and Mary. Don't know, but just a possibility. This Neil is likely a single brother of John's, but he could also be a father of Hugh I suppose. You may already have this info, but if not perhaps it will be of some help.

thank you for your prompt response. I think the Hugh Livingstone in the census is the same Hugh Livingstone as the ages are correct. I have a copy of Hugh Livingstone marriage document from 1862 but cannot read the details regarding his parents. looks like Ann Mcdiarmid and john livingstone but the only record i can find on IGI is a Catherine McDiarmid and John Livingstone but they married in 1805 seems unlikely that this Hugh is their son. From this Hugh to present day I have great detail of family history,(my grandmother was Margaret Livingstone born in argyll and treasured old family pictures). Hopefully my request to "Scotlands People" where I downloaded the document, will get back to me with a clarification of the parents details. From there I can further my research, but anyone else out there with information please post anything that may be of help, however trivial, as we all know the smallest detail can open up new avenues of research thanks karyn

I know this thread is a bit old but I have only just got into the whole genealogy thing so have a bit of catching up to do. My g grandfather was Hugh McDiarmid Livingstone, born in Swordley Ardnamurchan.
