I am just going through old forum threads and am wondering if there is any new information that has come up on the Ancient Livingstone Tartan 1003? Also does the Highland Society of London have a mailing address, or in this day and age email/web site connection?

Hi David, Sorry nothing new on Tartan 1003. From what I could tell the Highland Society had the tartan collection I am looking for in the 1970's and probably still has it. There must of been a collection of letters written by the clan chiefs in response to requests to submit tartans. I have seen one of them, but not of course the letter from Baron John Livingstone in 1815 if in fact it exists. Ultimately someone from one of the Tartan Societies may be able to help us shed some light on how we might be able to gain access or at least an answer to the mystery of the Tartan submitted to the Highland Society of LOndon by Clan Livingstone circa 1815. I have been distracted by other research projects of late, but I am not giving up on solving the mystery of Tartan 1003. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Hi David, Donald, Kyle and friends, I understand that the records of the Highland Soc. of London were deposited by the Society with the National Library of Scotland during October, 1977. Apparently, an inventory was prepared Oct-Nov.77. There are some 15 Spring-clip filing boxes containing admin. correspondence of the Soc ranging from 1781-1931, with other papers similarly filed. The correspondence was listed in the early 1900's and there are lists contained in boxes 1-3. I have however, no idea if the sample books are contained within these records. Hi Stewart, Thanks again. THat is a great lead. Yes I followed the trail to the 1970's which led me back to the Highland Society of London. Yes definitely some of the papers are located in the National Library but the big question is whether they gave them the swatch books. I honestly dont know for certain, but I don't see any evidence that they are there. I guess it is time to do some more digging. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Hi Stewart, My sense is that the swatch books are not in the National Library of Scotland, but obviously I need to contact them. I do think it is worth someone's efforts to check the first box of Correspondence which contains letters from the period of October 1 1781 to September 30, 1820 and see if any highland clan chiefs in particular Baron John Livingstone communicated with the Highland SOciety during this time. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink
