Hello Livingstone cousins, After first consulting with our Clan Chief Niall Livingstone,I have what I think should be great news for all of us. While recently completing my research on Dr. DAvid Livingstone's elder brother John Livingstone (1811-1899) of Listowel, Ontario,Canada, I was informed by a helpful staffmember of the archives at Listowel that John to my complete surprise has a great grandson David Livingstone who resides in the town of Waterloo, ONtario, about an hours drive from me. Doing my homework, I soon realized that Dr. David Livingstone's sons did not have sons, so what I had apparently discovered with the greatest of luck was probably the closest thing on earth to Dr. David Livingstone himself. David is not familiar with the Bachuil Livingstones, but from talking with him, I got the sense he is quite interested in anything to do with his famous relative and the Livingstone clan in general. And David is of course of obvious interest to those who have worked so hard over the last few years to identify links between Livingstones. No doubt, Niall will be able to answer any questions he has about the possible connection between his family and that the Bachuil Livingstones. There is also all the great information available here on the origins MacLea Livingstones which he may find quite interesting. Finally,I am sorry that the late Rob Livingstone is not here for this, but I would like to think he is here in spirit urging us to continue the many things were are all doing for the Clan. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Donald! A wonderful discovery, bravo to you! I am eager, of course, to suggest DNA testing David.

Hi Kyle, I was certainly hoping to locate some descendants of John Livingstone's in course of my research, but I tryed not to get my hopes up too much. In the back of my mind however I was hoping that a branch of John's family had remained in Ontario and that there was still a Livingstone out there to be found. That turned out to be very much the case. David told me today he is going through a difficult and sad time at the moment with a serious illness in his family. At a more appropriate time, we intend to get together and discuss about the Livingstones. The good news is that x-rays revealled my shoulder was not fractured; the bad news the pain is still there and my shortness of breath is getting worse. And then there is high blood pressure. Hoping to get all these things under control in February before they get the better of me. If not I guess Kyle you'll have to find another Maconlea Livingstone to replace me. regards Donald

Donald, You are to be congratulated on your discovery, brought about by a degree of luck and a great deal of hard graft. Now the reason that this is so exciting is that to my knowledge David himself has no direct male descendants - so a DNA line from his brother is as good as it is going to get. Now this David's ancestry is given as: 1. Neil Livingstone of Ulva 2. Neil Livingstone 3.John Livingstone Sr. (1811-1899) Born in Blantyre, Scotland died in Listowel, Ont. 4.John Livingstone Jr. 5.Harry Livingstone 6.David Livingstone of Waterloo, Ontario The Link to Bachuil that we are most comfortable with is: Dougal Baron of Bachuil b c 1680 >Neil b c 1715 would be 30 at Culloden in 1745 >>??Neil m M Morrison?? married 1774
The Baron of Bachuil,

Hi Kyle and Niall, Not to worry. Too much happening in the world of Maconlea and Livingstone these days to stop breathing now. I am seeing a lung specialist this week to check my bronchials. Hopefully she doesnt tell me to get rid of my cat. This is as I understand it is one possible lineage of David Livingstone great nephew of Dr. David Livingstone. 1. Neil Livingstone? a son of Baron Dougal

Hi Niall, Gee I had not thought it through that far, but it sounds like you obviously have. It will be an incredible event if it all turns out that you and David can be proven to be closely related and share the same ancestors. I will keep my fingers crossed. But realize that no matter how it goes as far as the DNA results, finding a lost descendant

Donald; as a chiropractor, I read with interest your mention of the breathing difficulty and high blood pressure. I know this isn't a column for such things, but from my perspective, having seen many thousands of people over the years, your current difficulties may have a very sound neurological and physiological rationale for some chiropractic work. If you want to know more, then email me on living@iinet.net.au Quite apart from that, fantastic work with the discovery of an Ontario descendant of John Livingstone of Listowell. I have often said that David Livingstone's Y-DNA will probably be found in Ontario or North America, and have been hoping so. David Livingstone at one stage did mention that all his Ulva clan relations had long since departed Argyll, and were now to be found in Ontario.

Hi Keith, Thank-you for the advice, but my breathing problems relate in part to having been exposed to dust and vehicle fumes, pet dander, suspected carpet and other household alergies, and being about 60 pounds overweight. Not alot of weight but enough to affect my breathing gradually and then in last several months dramatically. This weight has to go. THe weight is also a factor in the high blood pressure. I already to take high blood pressure medication but have side effects with asthma medication. In the final analysis, I must make the right health decisions and fast before it is too late. On a lighter note, I like to think I "researched and located" Dr. David's brother's kin. John Livingstone Senior's family tree was not unknown; some of Doctor Livingstone's descendants through the Wilson line have recorded John's family line and Rob was also aware that he had male descendants. That being said, I was told that I was first from this McLea Livingston society to contact John's descendant. As I said to Niall, had I realized earlier that John's descendant lived near me, I would have contacted him when Rob Livingston was still alive, so he could have shared some moments of Livingstone bliss in the last few months of his life. I know this breakthrough would have been very important to him. I dont know if you were following my e-mail exchanges between Stewart McLea and myself regarding Tartan 1003. As far as I can tell the Highland Society of London, not a museum in Edinburgh still has the tartan swatch collection signed and authorized by highland clan chiefs circa 1815. There may also be some correspondence also in a Highland Society collection of papers. I could be wrong about this, but if I am not, we might be pleasantly surprised with what me might find about Tartan 1003. Other things have occupied my time including John Livingstone Sr., but I will find the answers to this growing tartan mystery. Why I am sensing some sort of code of silence in SCotland regarding the Tartan 1003 original swatch. Why can we have access and information about our tartan swatch. What is so darn secretive about a tartan swatch? Maybe you can figure this one out. I have tried. I have seen photos of the collection so I know it still exists. Anyways. regards Donald (Livingstone)Clink

Goodo Donald. Congratulations on making the breakthrough for the clan and finding David Livingstone's Y-DNA, as it were! If we can enroll this chap to have his Y-DNA tested, then that will really help clan research. Apart from your current issues health-wise, which are all valid, it wouldn't hurt to have someone look at the upper thoracic spine high between the shoulder blades. There's quite probably one very tender spot in there, because a fall that is heavy enough to traumatize a shoulder is enough to mildly traumatize a spinal joint, and hence its function. The nerves that power up the heart and lungs emanate from that area, (the cardiopulmonary sympathetic trunk), and so working on that region to restore "normality" is a worthwhile aim and may help you with your other health goals. Cheers, mate! All the best! Keith.
