Look forward to hearing what you find out. I always think if you can find a helpful expert at an archives or library you are halfway there. I hope it works out for you. I noticed a while back that the correspondence etc. of the Highland Society of London at the National Library is indexed online if that is of any help to you. Donald

Hi David, I should qualify my previous information. There is an inventory of Highland Society of London correspondence listed from the year 1781 to 1895 that can be accessed on-line. I would assume that the collection covering the year 1815 and 1816 would be very interesting and might provide some insight as to the rationale of which clans were contacted and which clans did not submit tartans in response to the 1815 project. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Hi David, Well done. Fantastic. As I said, when you an expert at the archives (or library) your have way there. The gentleman I talked to didn't think that much research had been done regarding the history of the Highland Society of London Collection itself so who knows you may become a pioneer. This Mr Hogg obviously nows his stuff. Although I am and I am sure you are somewhat disappointed that there isn't more information regarding our clan and the 1815 project likely to be found in the collection at the library I am personally very glad and appreciative that you made the effort to contact Mr Hogg. regards Donald

Highland Society of London Enquiry
Hi David, Excellent effort once again. Dont be too disappointed. Hugh and the Curator of Textiles are the two people at the museum who would know about the collection. Hugh however pointed out to me in my discussion that they are experts on this collection and that there was no on staff researching this collection. You would expect someone at the museum to be informed on the collection. ANyways as you say this is a dead end. I left a message for Hugh to contact me with the address or e-mail for someone with the Highland Society of London. You might try calling him back or the other lady and see if you can get that address. My be another dead end, but for goodness sake there must someone in Scotland who is familiar with the Highland SOciety of London, their documents and their collection. I guess the library doesn't have correspondence between the Livingstones and the Highland Society likely either. As I said this appeared to have been a false lead from November 2006 that I received and now it would also appear that a number of Western Argyll clans in the Movern/Isle of Lismore/Appin area were not included in the 1815 collection of the Society. Tartan 1003 Highland Society of London 1815 was the information I received and obviously someone got Bain mixed up with Highland Society of London. I think I am going to check every edition including the original 1938 edition of Bain and see where they get Tartan 1003 illustrated in the old Bain book. It sure isnt in the 6th edition. It is black and REd with no green at all. Not even close to one that I wear that was recommended on our clan website. Donald
