Yet another supposed descendant of Dr. David Livingstone

Post by Bruce Livingstone »

I'm Bruce Livingstone (35) living in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I'm the son of John Stewart Livingstone who was the son of John Stewart Livingstone both from Glasgow, Scotland. I hope I'm not posting something inappropriate in this forum and that it's acceptable to just introduce myself. Somewhere in my lineage, my father told me that his father before him may have been adopted by someone in the Dr. David Livingstone family. He's not alive anymore so I can't really ask him, but does anyone know if any adoptions ever occured in the Dr. David Livingstone tree? Regardless, I may or may not have any relation to Dr. David Livingstone, but I'm still a proud Livingstone with many Livingstone relatives living in Eastern Canada, Eastern USA and the UK and any info. I can provide or learn would be most welcome.

Bruce, this is very interesting. Your second name Stewart would be possibly in honour of the clan relationship with Stewarts of Appin? David Livingstone himself wrote in his memoirs that his clan relatives from Ulva and Argyll were no longer in their original homelands, having migrated to Canada for better opportunities. There is evidence of many hundreds of Livingstones, McPhails, Morrisons, etc, living on PEI or in Nova Scotia by the end of David Livingstone's life (1873). So any male Livingstones in Canada and USA will be of interest for the DNA project. We theorize that the closest male relatives of Dr David will share a common male ancestor with him, and therefore have the same Y-chromosome. Dr David's sons pre-deceased him without leaving male descendants. Even exploring your known ancestry further through online Scottish birth and death records would be very useful to other researchers, especially if you post your findings on this site. But just be warned; they bred like rabbits! I was contacted recently by a researcher who had found a sister of my ancestor, and she brought more information to the table, which was posted.

Hi Keith, I have located some of the information regarding the Doctor's two brothers, one of which went to Canada. See my recent e-mail regarding Doctor Livingstone's correspondence regarding his family. THere are also some family trees for his brother John out there. The indications are that a number of John's descendants left Canada for the States, but hopefully I will find that someone that stills live in Canada. His great nephew also Dr. DAvid Livingstone, grandson of John Livingstone had a medical practice in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada in the early 1900's. He was very proud of his family connection according to an article I read. Another lead I need to follow. I should point out that

My father was an architect, moved to Montreal during the second world war with his parents, then to Calgary in 1967. I think I may try that DNA test.

Hi Bruce, Your grandfather's story may or may not be true, but the fact that your Livingstones came from the Glasgow area is interesting in light of the fact that Dr. David's family lived at Blantyre which is near Glasgow. Some of my relatives also considered themselves kin to Dr. David as many other Livingstones seem to. It is as you can imagine in many cases an impossible task to prove or disprove these family legends, but I started with a quote from the Doctor himself in 1860 when he stated that his older brother John Livingstone (1811-1899) settled in Lanark COunty, Ontario, Canada and that he had other relatives in Ontario, possibly in Lanark County or elsewhere in Ontario. His brother John came to Ontario in the 1840's and I am looking into the possiblity that one of Doctor David's Uncles or some other relative of him or his father settled here in the 1820's. Calgary is a nice city to live in and your not that far from some fantastic mountain scenery. Andrew Lancaster is responsible for the Livingstone DNA project and will no doubt be interested in getting in touch with you when he sees your message. As I am currently experiencing lung and heart problems I taking each day at a time, but hope to be visiting this site as often as I can. regards Donald (Livingstone) Clink
