MacLeas in Argyll, 18th Century

Donald had asked in one of the Tartan threads: "When doing research on your MacLeas have you found any 18th century MacLea records from MacLeas living in Argyll Parishes that closely border Bute?" This is a great question! I haven't closely looked at Macleas from Argyll near Bute specifically. I have been in correspondence with the MacLeas (they say Mack-LAY in comparison to my Mack-LEEs) of Baltimore, Maryland.

I am not sure what is needed so I'll give over kill. =) This is the list I have from Scotland People of all the McLeas/MacLeas in Argyll. I just have the names, date and Parish listed. I can send anyone the parents names as well. 07/03/1806

All, Noted that there were 7 McLea births in Kilfinan between 1747 and 1755. The Kilfinan parish is located less than a mile from Lindsaig, the long time home of the McLeas of Lindsaig as described in the McLea Account. This large presence of McLeas is consistent with the fact tht the McLea's of Lindsaig were a large landowner in Argyll. Both the 1688 and 1755 Valuation Rolls for Argyll show the McLeas of Lindsaig owning 9 merks of land. I will be visiting Bute and Lindsaig in May. Among other things , I will be looking for McLeas/Livingstones both past and present.

Hello Donald, The actual website is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/. I believe I typed it wrong originally, it is Scotlandspeople not Scotspeople.

haha I do not know if I have all Argyll from before 1800 as it cost 1 "credit" per page and I am working to get each era down. I do know that I have "Lismore Appin and Duror" as I was researching it, but the rest of Argyll I might not. When I just did a search for Livingston between 1553 and Dec 31, 1799 for the entire county of Argyll I came up with 181 matches which would be 8 pages (or 8 credits). Livingstone for the same search came back with 88 hits and only 4 pages (24 of those 88 are listed below, so you could say that almost 1/3 of the Argyll Livingstone was baptised in Lismore.) I am not sure if LIVINGSTONE would come into the search for LIVINGSTON or not. From the numbers I would assum ethat it does. Here they are: 01/01/1759
