I have been lent a copy of Sir Thomas Innes of Learney's book "Tartans of the Clans and Families of Scotland" published by W& AK Johnston.

Thank you Niall for this latest posting. It is most interesting. My father had a first cousin who was named Mary Mackinlay Kerr, always known as Maimie. Her mother was my grandfather's sister, and I think there was a feeling in the family that there was a relationship between the Mackinlays and the Livingstons. Quite why they thought this seems to be lost to us now, so I have been very interested to see your posting. The copy of The Tartans of the Clans and Families of Scotland you have been lent sounds interesting too. My edition published in 1952 has no mention of the Mackinlays. Regards, Jill

Niall, The book by Sir Thomas Innes of Leaney (Lord Lyon King of Arms) was first published December 1938 and features one of the earliest drawn illustrations of our clan tartan. Earlier that same year the first edition of Robert Bain's Tartan book came out with a better resolution colour plate of our Tartan from a sample which had been submitted to the Publisher by a Glasgow Tartan manufacturer. Robert Bain was a Glasgow librarian. The main school of thought on MacKinley is that they originate from Findlay son Buchannon of Drumikill and were predominate in the LEnnox district north of Callendar. The similarity to Macinlea however has them often linked with Clan Maconlea or McLeas. It is interesting that there is some DNA information linking them. I wonder what the results would be for Macauley another clan whose name sounds somewhat similiar to ours. Donald
