Re: Nova Scotia/PEI Livingstone Research

Post by Canadian Livingstone »

Hi Mary Ann,

No there is still hope we can figure this one out. what I have from Dr. St. Clair for old Kates son John is as follows:
John Livingston 1847-1904 Thornburn Nova Scotia married Mary Ann Livingston 1855-1939 of Big Bras d-or Livingstons. I dont think she was a Bras dor Livingston. I think however that Roberta could be correct and that is should be Mary Ann Livingston 1855-1939 of her Low Point Livingstons. Roberta can you verify this for me with this info that it is your Mary Ann Livingston. The fact you have a Thorburn connection and other reasons. I think that Dr. St. Clair could be in error on that.

Hello,

This could still be correct, I looked for John L. and Mary Ann Livingston in the census. and in the 1901 census Mary Ann's husband is alive and then in the 1911 Census Mary Ann is a widow. So with the information from Donalds souorces this John died in 1907 I believe it stated. On the Marriage license for John & Mary Ann Nov. 10 , 1873 it states Mary Ann is living in New Glasgow N.S. and John in Vale Collier,N.S. Is there a 1871 census for Nova Scotia? I'm not sure but we could see where they are living before their marriage and with who?

Hi Jewel,Roberta and Maryann,

No John is accounted for in 1871 Census. He is living with his widowed mother old Kate and rest of his siblings in Mull River, Inverness County, Cape Breton including his brother Duncan before he married and went off to the mine. No it appears that the only error is in the info that stated that John's wife Mary Ann Livingston 1855-1839 is from of Bras'dor meaning the Bras dor Cape Breton Livingstons of Angus Livingston b.1773. No Roberta was correct I think this Mary Ann in the book actually is the Mary Ann b.Sept.23,1855 from your Low Point Livingston family . The information she is from the Bras d'or Livingtons I am almost certain was an error. Roberta I am pretty sure is correct. The book is wrong.

Hi All,

So judging from the 1901 Census John was born in 1848. So we have the 1871 Census that gives us a birth date of abt. 1846 and Dr St. Clair had 1847 and the 1901 Census has 1848. Now which one is correct? Isnt Genealogy fun?

Hello Donald,

Yes I agree, I feel Roberta and Maryanne are definately correct about this information. I think the error comes as you do with the information given that Mary Ann Livingston was from Big Bras Dior. It is a shame somethng like that can't be corrected because it could really be a problem for researchers.

Hi Maryanne,

You asked if anyone has come across a Minnie Livingston. If you read my post of the1911 census for Mary A. Livingston youwill see a Minnie listed, I think Minnie is probablly Mary J. born about 1884 or 1885.

Hi Jewel,
Oh well at least we were fortunate to discover the true connection to your Livingston family to the Mull River Livingstons thanks to Roberta and Mary Ann. I dont know the family tree well enough to have seen that one.
